P bass question

Shout out to Jeff K from the mid state! Glad we're in agreement on these classic 50's-everyone I've played I 've loved as well. Mine also happens to be an '06 model( in black FWIW.)

Also to fourstringdrums-My earlier post was actually directed to the quote from canadian-man-44 you quoted in your post-my bad. He was speaking of a band member who preferred his MIA in a blind test-not you-I misread. This MIA is a de luxe and active I assume. So his band mate I'm sure noticed tonal differences from the MIM to the MIA.

I fully support your view on your gear 100%. Keep rockin'.

No excitement here for MIMs. As it happens, I played a bunch of Jazz Basses at my local dealer's shop tonight and did my best to objectively rate them.

The MIM was the worst of the lot, a Squier Classic Vibe was better, the Geddy better yet and the winner: the MIA. Best tone by a mile, very tight, well made, with quality materials. The Geddy certainly was no slouch, though.

I do have a Road Worn P that's outstanding, I must say.

The Greasebucket should have been added to the regular AS loom, but wasn't.

The Highway One has had the same pickups and electronics (+/- the Greasebucket) as its contemporary American/American Standard for some years now.

Am I alone in absolutely despising the American Series case?

WHY, in an instrument that overpriced, could they not have spared a buck or two to have a flap over the storage compartment so that if someone opens the case when it's leaning against a wall the entire contents don't spill directly out on the instrument?

What gristlehead signed off on this? :mad:

It make no odds to me wether my bass is Mexi, Yankee or Chinky...

I admit that I was nervous pulling the trigger on it having read so much rubbish in these forums.

Turned out to be a beauty and no less of a fender for that!

I've had some great compliments on the tone of this bass, not selling this one... no way!

Love how people dog mims. And the "hit or miss" phrase. Wether u want to believe it or not at the end of the day the mims gonna sound darn near like a mia when set up. So my advice - unless u have extra money to burn its not worth it. I mean if u get a big bonus or tax return go for it. Treat urself. But if ur not a super serious bass player dont bother spend the extra 700 its gonna cost for a mia on a better rig or something cause a mim will be more than good to you.

It's "status" only among those too ignorant to have more substantial reasons.

People pass on the MIM Standards primarily because of their notoriously poor quality control, which is a direct result of what I've always considered really stupid policies at the Ensenada plant.

QC at Corona is bad enough, but Ensenada's is atrocious.

And unless you've been hiding in a cave for the past couple of years, you'd know that the new Squiers coming from the PT Indonesia plant are becoming hugely popular among players who would have never considered Squier previously. Why? Because they are better built.

It's a total crapshoot if bad frets, drippy paint, misalignments and other build faults matter to you.

That could all be tightened up tomorrow if FMIC cared, but they don't.

Ask any pro and they will tell you the same.

After seeing this in my inbox this morning.....squire has really done it....i've been skeptical because the quality of my first squire bass was terrible...but i might just have to try one of these...granted no price is out yet that i can see

It has nothing to do with status. I would much rather have a CV Squier than an MIM Fender 99% of the time.

To OP:
With 3 Jazz, what is it that makes you want to get a P?? Might be able to just mod a jazz depending on what you're after (neck, pick ups, yes some routing required....) Just curious. I'm interested in a P myself. I have 5 Jazz, never really gave P a chance :)

just the fact that i've never had one...i can get somewhat of a p tone from my jazzes...but i hear that its just a different animal....and id like to give it a chance...and it doesnt help that ive just acquired gas for them, and i cant explain how that occurred lol

I have a Highway 1 P (from the 2005/2006 changover-it does have the Badass bridge) that feels like any vintage P I've touched but better. It's on the lighter side for a P Bass. Plus it's always had a great resonant tone when unplugged but it could never translate to the amp. I went through a plethora of pickups and ended up working with John (JWorrellBass) on revising and reviewing his P pickups while he was launching and it happened to be just what I needed. Now it's my favorite hard rocking bass. If it's loud, I'm using that one. It's a clean, full (deep, present, and bright!) modern tone that really lends itself to your playing position and technique. I love it so much.

My MIM Active P Special feels classy. Everything is smooth, shiny almost to the point of glossy, and just feels elegant. The action on this bass is incredible. I've been able to tweak it to perfection in under 5 minutes since I was 16. With the flats it just screams old school despite being an active. Adding the treble really does a convincing roundwound impersonation in the mix. I'd never solo the (weak) Noiseless J on the bridge but I do blend them for a killer mix tone. The P kind of dominates but the J adds just enough character. I've never touched an MIM bass before or after that was even close to this one. (My brother's MIM Deluxe Player's Strat though... ah! I owned it at one point and totally regret giving it back to him. SO GOOD!)

Yes... my MIM P is my first go at them too... I bought my Jazz in 1976 (ish) and I've also owned a SB1000 fretless and a Stingray, both have now gone.

I really wished I'd tried a Precision earlier... now I have gas for another mexi - RoadWorn 50's Precision.
