So I have all these Jazz Basses ... And one P Bass. It's strung with flats, it's black and maple (just like the bass I learned on) and it plays and sounds great. I just .... Don't gel with it. It's not the bass, it's me, I am really comfortable with a Jazz style neck. So, what are my options? It's not a bass that I will play all the time, so I don't want to spend too much on it, about as much as a used USA Fender will cost, maybe a little more.

Fender or Fender style for sure. All I want is a single P pickup, doesn't need to be active. I *really* want a purple sparkle Adam Clayton, but those are pretty rare!

I should also say that I don't want to go the parts route and/or try to buy a different neck for a regular P Bass.

Ha! Just realized that I’m putting a P neck on a jazz body!

P Bass with a J neck
easy peasy! most of us who prefer that configuration have already done it --- some of us: over and over again! ;) i get the impression from TB posts that it's the first, most common option for many P-bass lovers.

:wideyed:

that sounds like risky behavior!

seriously: good looking neck/board you've got there!

Hopefully you'll enjoy browsing through this:

J Neck P Bass Club

(I did :D )

Here are my (2)... Black one born in 2012 (Geddy Lee neck)- White one in 2013 (American Special neck)... still my #1 & 1a, respectively! (waterslides changes optional ;))

Why dont you just put a J neck on the one you have?

I play P-necks on J-basses all the time, by swapping them out myself...if you're using a pre-drilled/used neck, it's probably one of the easiest parts-swaps to do

Yeah, I'm with you and your post! ^

Sorry for doing a 180 on this thread but I did a P neck onto a Jazz Bass. But, I like the 1 and 5/8 inch P necks and not the 1 and 3/4 inch.

You should have very little trouble finding a J neck for your P.

Dare I say it... Peavey Fury!

USA G&L LB100 can be ordered with a J neck option, you might find a used one.

As mentioned , lakland 44-64 (I’ve seen these with different nut sizes, so check the listing or ask the seller)

Fender CS Postmodern journeyman precision, but they’re $$$

Many more options if you expand to active/passive and PJ. But like you OP, I wanted passive, P-only. Don’t be afraid of a neck swap, it’s easy peasy!

I hear you loud and clear. I have a few PJs, but nothing that automatically gave me that classic P sound. Then oddly enough, I bought an LTD J-1004 and there was the sound. I mean, it shouldn't be, but it is. J body and neck, dual EMG soapbars with active preamp and a f'cking crazy heavy body = P-bass sound. Weird. My obsession with feeling incomplete being a rocker without a P has been sated for now.
