Pairing 1000W amp with 400W cab

So I have a Hartke 4x10 amp rated at 400W @ 8ohms. I’m checking out the Bugera BV1001M bass head to pair with it, which is rated 1000W at 8 ohms. Is it possible to have to much headroom? Do I risk damaging my cab with an amp this powerful? Should I opt for my secondary choice, the Peavey MiniMega, rated 1000W @ 4 ohms? Thanks.

If you hear speaker farts, turn down and or reduce the amount of sub 100hz frequencies.

My only issue with the predictable shots at the Bugera is that, as someone who owned both a Veyron Mosfet and a Peavey Minimega, the Veyron sounded much better to me. By comparison the Peavey was muffled and required tweaking to address it.

Buy the one that sounds good to you. How many who are taking potshots at the Bugera have actually tried one?

I thought so.
:D

Agedhorse is never wrong. Bugera(behringer) pulls their power ratings out of their ass. If your reason for buying the bugera is the price tag is all you can afford then go for it, im sure its an okay amp, but if you want something higher quality and are willing to pay for it then buy anything else.

I've tried a few, and while they don't sound horrible sitting in the guitar shop, Behringer has a long history of QC issues and misleading marketing.

There are other affordable options that don't come with the risk factor. I will never give them my money again unless it's in the PA equipment realm.

Not necessarily true at all.

You might not be able to burn the drivers on that cab with that amp, but you could still easily break them via over excursion by turning the volume and bass controls up too high.

Yes I agree with you 100%. I wasn't saying it would be indestructible but u could push it a little harder then 1000 theoretical watts into a 400cab

I was providing some factual information so that a more meaningful discussion about amplifier power versus speaker power handling could be had.

Listen to both and buy the one you are most comfortable with.

A few what... Veyrons?
:D

If not, like many, the critique lacks relevance. I personally know lots of folks with long term, trouble-free service from their Veyrons... including myself. It can happen, yet people perpetuate negative info for some strange reason. Why?

Veyrons can sound nice on gigs too. BTDT.

The reason people continue to diss Behringer is because it was a hard and well earned reputation. Uli made himself the butt of the Industry joke all by himself, even without the help of TB. I don't care if he made a good amp once, or even twice. Even a broken clock is right twice a day :D No diss to anyone here. If you bought in and it's good for you, then that's great. I've been around enough liars and thieves to know they have a tough time breaking their old habits. I just know I'm not going to be funding Uli's tribe.

Oh, BTW, Brad, I respect you for standing up and stating what you feel is right, in a forum where many disagree, some violently :D Seriously, I hope all you stuff works out well for you. I'm just not into it on several levels.

Yes, you do risk blowing the speakers in your 400W cab with a 1000W amp, ought to be obvious.

However if you make sure never to turn the amp up above the cab's capability you should be safe.

Normally you would use a cab that is rated higher then the amp's peak wattage to make sure you don't damage the speakers.
You risk blowing that speaker with a 250 watt amp

Speaking of tribes, the automatic anti-Behringer thing borders on religious fervor.
:D

All that's cool... it doesn't change the fact that the particular amp in question works for many folks. And the other option, the Minimega did not for me. So while some folks carry personal baggage, others buy gear that works for them. It's not like anyone has ever been upset with Hartley Peavey, right?

Right?

I just get tired of people trafficking in things they have no experience with, just being part of a negative herd. I try things for myself. I recommend others do the same. You never know...

To be fair, I don't like Peavey either. I did used to own a Behringer ultrabass head, and have also owned a few behringer power amps. Honestly the behringer head sounded fine, great even, but if I had to choose what to invest my money into these days, I would definitely invest it in something with a more reliable name behind it.

Understood. But that's not what we're talking about. What have you heard about the reliability of the Veyrons? There are a bunch of them in use around here professionally. I had two with absolutely no issues. I just heard a friend of mine last week with his, using the same cab I use and he sounded great. He's had his for well over a year of pretty constant use.

"What's more reliable than the Veyrons?" would be a good question.
:D

BTW I don't dislike Peavey, I didn't care for my Minimega. There's a difference. One's a brand, the other is an actual model.

Behringer is hit or miss. Had a VAmp Bass Pro for home recording for a time, not only was that a pretty damn nice bass pre, it was an incredible guitar pre as well. Killed it by dropping a screwdriver into it while changing the battery. That was probably eight years after buying it. Not Behringers fault. And their “tube amp emulator” guitar dirt box is one of the best sounding stomp boxes I have ever used. But it’s not terribly well made, none of their stuff really is, and that gives me a lot of pause with a bass amp, something that has to handle heat, a lot of electricity and vibration.

I bet it sounds better than the Peavey, as most things do. But I doubt it would last as long.

I did

I might be wrong but I think u have head room backwards I always thought u wanted your cab to handle more then what your amp can throw at it I have a 4ohm 600watt rms 4x10 Marshall cab I paired to my peavey minimax that is rated at 500watt rms therefore I should be able to turn my amp near full without any issues.

Agedhorse has designed som products you may have heard of like the Mesa Subway 800 series. He won’t bite your head off, but he knows a thing or two or a billion about amps. Don’t worry, early on I almost “corrrcted” Bob Gallien about something he said about amps. Oops.
