Double Bass Palatino Megathread part I

.... and then tragedy struck!!
saturday afternoon, just knocked off work. walkin out the door with my new riley (palatino) eub. feelin excited about this new toy of mine. slung the shoulder straps over my shoulder. bad idea. the straps broke under the weight of the bass, and the first thing to hit the ground was the headstock!!!!!
the resulting impact left a crack in the neck and almost popped the fingerboard clean off.
i managed to get it glued up today and i await the results.
for all those palatino users....
DONT TRUST THE GIG BAG!!!!

Really sorry to hear that you have had this happen already!
The first day I have none the peg head hit the door frame and I had a huge dent. Then it promptly started to disinigrate. I had Colorado Case make a custom bag for me and for 250 I feel its cheap insurance.

yes, indeed, this is something that has been left out from this forum! it hasn't happened to me, but i have, in my pre-buy research, heard that the necks on these are very delicate!! well, lets just say it- cheap!!. i heard about fingerboards just popping off, but i suspect it would take trauma like above to do it. all users need to be very careful with these instruments. and what (what kind of glue/clamps) do you use to fix this anyway?

I wonder if any other bass dropped on its head (or scroll) would hold up any better. It seems the gig bag is more of a problem - I carried it by the shoulder straps the first day I had it, and smacked the top into 2 doorways. The bag is flimsy, and I could see the strap breaking off (I have an EBG gig bag that broke a strap).

In other words, I'm not sure this is evidence the neck itself is prone to breakage, but I hope everyone would post any observations to the contrary.

I may have seen it on google when I was researching the buy, or it may have been here on a Palatino search. I know that I have seen this problem described. I know I saw a used VE on ebay that had been repaired. It's finger board had popped off after a tumble.
I would like to find/rig something better for a case. I'm sure theres something out there, and when I find it, I'll let us know.

hey guys,
got my baby glued back up the other day and will string it up soon. glued up nice and clean and the crack is hard to see.
i dont think the fingerboard was glued on very well to start off with. i used a modified alphatic resin (titebond) and some G-clamps and wood blocks to glue mine up. should hold strong.

I believe someone ripped them recently in the Dudepit with that concern. The posts seem to be gone now.

If it happens to me, I would notify both the dealer and Palatino. These things don't get fixed unless someone complains. It costs nothing to lodge a complaint, and it frequently gets you free stuff, especially if you're courteous but assertive.

Hi all,

I haven’t posted in a long time since I received my EUB in September “been playing with my toy”. Anyway, I love my Palatino bass and have science I replaced the strings with Helicore Orchestral strings H610, and took the adjusters off the bridge and now the action is fine not perfect but good for learning on and until I get a bridge made. Also, there were little pieces of gray foam that was used to ship the bass, so I stuffed them into the spaces on the tail piece to mute the buzzing when I would hit an open G. But now the problem is the neck joint I don’t know if it is because the rushed to get these off the line back when I ordered it, (because they were on backorder for months) but the neck joint is starting to separate from the body and it is pissing me off. I need to get it repaired and live in New Jersey and minutes from NYC any recommendations and possible price estimate of what it would cost to fix?

You know, thats another thing about Jim @ Wires On Wood- When I bought this, I asked him to pick me out the best one he had, noting the neck problems I had read about. He said he would and I think he actually DID! I read that some got shipped with the fingerboard already loose! Mine arrived (and still is) fine...

When I get a neck crack if its broken off then I work until I can get to fix back as cleanly as possible and then glue it. Then the tricky part. I roughter in a slot in the neck and spline it. Usually 1/8 to 3/8 slot and then glue the spline in. Sand fill if needed the refinish. If it were a bass broken at the tuners I would glue and then mill off an 1/8 on each side then glue and refinish. It really depends on the severity of the crack if I will spline and also the shape of the crack to. I once fixed a Martin D45 that was broken so cleanly in the middle of the nech that I took off the finger board and splined it from the top so you couldn't see it AT ALL!
If your finger board doe's pop off I would recomend Hyde glue. You can heat up the finger board and take it back off if you ever need to. Anyway there is my 2 cents.
Just thought if anyone doe's buy one try to get one break. The more pieces the harder it is to get it back in place. Wood fiber compresses and stretches durring a break.

Hey gfred,
I've been watching the auction on ebay if it stays down I'll go for it to make a little on it. It looks like the break can be splined without it showing. With the Maple being short grand it should be real clean. A little laquer stick and vala! like new.
And its sold if I get it. Good find. Thanks.

I think if you start with strings this will help. And yes Upright is more work that a bass G. Setup on the controls will help. I always play through a pre amp this helps a great deal. Give it some time and read these posts there are a lot of tips that will give what you want. The Palatino is a great EUB for the money.

Need some help please. I have a really bad buzzing sound when I play an F, E, or Eb on the D string of my Palatino. I don't get the same degree of buzz anywhere else on any of the other strings. I have tried raising the bridge but it does not seem to help. As this is my first upright, I'm not sure what else to try. Any suggestions from out there. I have the bass strung with Thomastik Spirocore Light guages. Any advice would be welcomed....Thanks....Dan
