MJE, I will be playing mostly jazz. Thanks for any advice on strings.

Fred Hammon, I bought mine on ebay. It was delivered about a week after I ordered it. Arrived in good shape. Stand arrived a day later and appears to be a good solid stand that adjusts well to fit the shape of the bass.

Dan,
As far as acoustic uprights go, I used
D'addario Helicore Pizzicato for E and A strings and Thomastick Spirocore Weich for D and G strings. The D'addarios were a little brighter, which gave the low strings a nice growl but I found them a little too bright for my taste for the top two strings. You can order upright strings individually and it doesn't cost much more. Hope this helps.

Hi -

I was wondering what kind of stand you have? Is it not the stock endpin?

I was looking at some drum hardware to make a free-standing support, but if there's something out there already, I'd consider it.

Mr. Hammon- I bought an ebay palatino from a ebay store called "wire(s?)onwood.com.
I searched around and found this guy. Real nice. It was a "make offer" type deal (I guess he doesn't advertise these in Ebay/EUB), and I saved like $90.00 bucks. Even more, If I remember, because (I think) shipping was free.
I'm not affiliated with him- I was just impressed that he answered EVERY SINGLE EMAIL like the same day. I asked him to pick me out the best one he had, and i believe he did. If you check him out, (I don't know if he'll actually remember me), tell him Steve from Wichita said 'hi'.

If you're talking about the Ingles stand, you can't play the bass on the stand - the neck holder is in the way.

After looking at it closely, I wonder if you could replace the neck holder with something that supports the back of the bass?

Gotcha. I was hoping you meant a playing support. I find the coat-hangar/endpin combination is really limiting - I absolutely could not find a way to bow with that setup.

Correct, you can't play the bass while it is sitting in the Ingles stand but it provides a nice place to keep the bass while I am not playing it. It adapts to the thin profile surprisingly well and is very well balanced.

I turn the bass and lean the neck against my shoulder. This way I can hold my elbo up to create uniform pressure against each string. It lets the tube rest against my left side. Works well for me.

Hi,
I would have to say that the bout extension (the u-shaped metal piece that screws into the side) is pretty much unusable as it came. I had an Azola and the one it came with came out from the body and made a long oval shape faced sideways so it didn't roll side-to-side. Check out Link Removed. Haven't figured out how to modify mine but I know it needs to be done. I went into this knowing that for $630, it probably wouldn't be perfect but it's much better than I thought. I bought a $2,800 Czheck (sp?) upright and the setup it came with was almost unplayable. $150 later, with the help of a good luthier, it played like a dream. Of course the Azola came set up perfectly, but it was $2K. The setup on the Palatino is very good and the pickup (which I thought I would have to replace) is also pretty good. Other than the tailpiece resonating, the bout, and the weight (it's pretty heavy compared to the Azola or a Steinberger a friend has) The bass doesn't have any problems. Even the strings it came with were decent, unlike the wire ropes that came on the Czheck bass. I'm pleasantly surprised.

P.S. Also note on the Azola the black piece wrapped around the strings below the bridge. It's a piece of thick nylon with velcro. Guess they have a little damping problem too!

I did not mean anything by any comment I made and hope you took no offense by anything I said. Yes I did make a new bridge to get more spacing so it would more match the other basses I have and to get a better quality piece of maple. And most importantly is sound quality.
Holding the basses neck against my shoulder came from the purchase of Art of the Bow with Francois Rabbath.
He extensively explaines the way to do it and it would be better explained if you got the vidio. It has helped me to bow much better and it helps my back. I have 3 crushed deteratin discs. By the way I did go to Guitar center and take a look and a ridged stand for the bass. The biggest thing for me is I don't want to carry any more than I have to. Again I hope I did not offend anyone with my comments. Its just a frendly conversation and a really cool place to hook up with each other and help each other out.

wooo!
hey all. im a lil excited coz my palatino has just come in.
bought it through the shop that i work at. havent got it home yet but ive had a play around during my lunch break today.
im keen to hear how its sounds stock, but from the sounds of things it doesnt take much to improve. cheers to all the guys who have posted so far. helped me out with the decision no end. ill let you know how it goes.

First, I want to say thanks to everyone for posting such great information about this EUB. This forum has been a great help to me because I had always wanted an EUB ( no space for a regular upright ) so when I saw the Palatino's on Ebay I thought to good to be true. That lead me to a google search and that lead me to this forum. Well I got my bass last week, picked up the a heavy duty cymbal stand yesterday and slapped on a set of Helicore hybrid Mediums today and " man" it sounds great. I bought on Ebay from Wires on Wood for $600 and with a $25 Ebay coupon it was $575 out of pocket. If wasn't for this forum I'd still be wishing for what I now have. :hyper: :D

I agree, easy to do business with and the fastest shipping I've seen. Now it's just a matter of wood shedding, hand positions and listening, after playing electric bass for 10 + yrs this is an exciting new adventure.
