:cool: Plan 2 use My Palatino at gigs this w/end. Will let U guys know how she goes. Tho I can see how a new set of "real" strings would help the sound- cut the "mwah" of which I'm not a fan. But all in all, A great bass for the $$$$$:eek: Can't wait for the gigs-one on sat & one on Sun. Have one tonite & 2morow-but in another band-not jazz- & althoough I could use it for a few songs- my car broke, so I'm havin 2 downsize to fit in a car!!!!! Damn!!!!:bawl: Happy pluckin, Rod.

I think the piezo (or maybe the preamp) doesn't work; the out is very low, I can't hear anything whith headphones, if I plug it into the amp, I have to set the volume and the gain at 9/10; I tried to move the btidge backward and foreward, but I still haven't a decent out. Touching the piezo (with the eub plugged in the amp), I noticed that only a small part of it works (only the side under the E and A), is the same on your piezo pickup?

maxmerc??? hope I got ur handle somewhere near right!!! :hmm: Sounds a bit suss 2 me- especially if one side is workin OK- Have U tried changing the 9v battery? That'd be my 1st port of call if low output is a prob. Keep us posted!
Used my Palatino at the jazz band-4 piece, just bass,drums,gtr & vocalist-lounge/cafe more than real "jazz"- gives us more scope too! BUT the bass was great-all the band said it was the bomb! I-being picky of course- think the strings that came on it need changing asap(must go back thru the pages of this thread 2 find out wot U guys 'r using) Both D & G string seem a touch "mwah" like 2 me- I rather the thump.
So if anyone out there can reccomend me what sort to get, that'd be great. BUT all in all, a very succesful 1st jazz band gig with the new bass.
Thanx to all who got on this thread, didn't worry what some "snobs" :rollno: who HAVE to have a bass costing many times what the Palatino costs- & PROBABLY only sounds marginally better!!!! :spit: Cheers to all palatino owners & experimenters on this here thread ....& elsewhere.

Today I played at a jam session and there was an Eminance there. We both had different setups and way different sound. As far as I am concerned the Palatino was Super. We used my set up to try them both out and found the Palatino to be really close to the Eninance. Now do understand I have done a great deal of changes to it get where I want it, but the original bass but Not the electronics!. I am so impressed with this bass it has everything but the reprutation.
Now please understand I am not putting the Eminance down in any way and I still would like to have one. What I am saying it it's a great bass for the price and it will hold it's own.

:hyper: With U all the way there NO Handles, - I only got mine a couple of weeks ago- haven't put proper strings on yet, but am really happy with her. For the price,with the few 'minor' I mean MINOR modifications, the Palatino does it's job fantastically, I can't wait to put on new stings. Do U have a reccomendation for what sorta strings I should get- Ive been playin elec. bass for 35yrs but uprites are new to me as far as the finer points- I just know what sound I want- nice dull thump- pref as little 'MWAH' as possible. Any & all suggestions'll help me decide on something I know V.little about, & they aint cheap-so I don't wanna waste my $$$-of whih I don't have in abundance anyway! Cheers guys & gals. Rod.;)

String choices depend on how you want to sound. Guts will thump,but cost.I have some Pirarstros' that thump. Nylons will maybe come close to guts, (MAYBE), depends on what you get.
Hybrid with some type of rope or braided core will be more forgiving to your fingers, wont really thump, but sing, depending on what you get. Eurosonics blend an plastic outer sleeve with a braided inner core. They can thump somewhat. Solo tuned strings will have a little less tension, which could help, if thats what you want. Orchestrals will have more. UR strings come in different guages, like electric strings, but not such great differences. Depends on your fingers and finger tips, and how you want to sound. You'll get more rosonance with a higher bridge, just like on any bass.
Get some Thomastik Spirocores- Rope core, good, loud string that lasts a long time and won't break your wallet. Hope this helps. Remember-have fun.

Cheers GFRED, that helps-but keep 'em comin'. Thats what I need, the more info the better- after all this thread was the main reason behind me gettin a Palatino!!!!!!!!! :D Will prob. try 2 get hold of some of the thomastik Spirocores, if U reckon they are good, are not too 'Mwah-ie'- bright??? & are not costing the earth-still wonder why Dbl bass strings-while not THAT different from elec bass flatwounds- still cost 4-5 times the price?????????:spit: Still, I'm happy- I got a EUB, it sounds good, it didn't break me -$$$ , very coool!!!

I've used Helicore and Spirocore on a full upright but not an EUB. My opinion is the Helicore's were more bright sounding than the Spirocore's. I liked this brightness on the E and A string but found them too bright for my taste on the D and G so I ended up buying single strings, Helicore Medium gauge Pizzicato for E and A, and Spirocore Weich for D and G.

One thing's for sure, you'll have thicker calluses playing upright than electric!! I found that I needed to play at least every other day just to keep my calluses and hand muscles in shape for the upright. EUB's a little easier on your hands, though.
I actually bought my first EUB because I was playing upright exclusively then and I was in the Navy and going on a 6 month deployment. I knew that if I stopped for that long it would almost be like starting over!
Good luck and enjoy the EUB. Upright is a very cool beast, indeed.

Thanx guys, will take that all on board. I just got the "snob" routine from a bass shop in Sydney. Contacted them via their website re strings, said The deal-how I got the Palatino after much viewing of this thread & much talking etc etc..., they came back with "nothing leaves our shop without being thoroughly checked over, set up sanded & planed etc..."- of which I hadn't asked about,:eyebrow: then " On that EUB, U will need to get Only the lightest tension strings, as the bass will break if U use any other types" :crying: I had asked whether Obligatos would be OK for a piezo p/up? I won't bother replying & telling 'em that a lot of 'Talkbass' ers' seem to get on ok with all sorts of strings!!!! Please tell me if I'm wrong here????????:p Cheers Rod

First post! I just got my Palatino last night, purchased used locall from a player in my area.

It plays pretty well for such an inexpensive instrument, though I will need to make some adjustments after playing with it for a while. The previous owner had replaced the strings (with Piastro Flat Chromesteels) and had installed a K&K BassMaster Pro pickup. I tried the built-in pickup, thinking that I could save a few bucks by not buying the K&K, but after hearing both pickups, I decided to spend the extra bucks. The K&K makes the bass sound much more like a real DB to my ears.

I've not used the Piastro strings before, in my previous experience (high school and college orchestras) I've played various laminated basses, notably a late '60s Kay with Thomastik Spirocores, and the Piastros feel a little odd to my fingers.
