The Yamaha BB425 or BB1025 would be great choices. The Carvin P5 does come passive if that is how you want it.

Try the RBX- 400 or 500 series Yamaha's. Real bang for the buck! $400.00--$600.00, range. Great instruments! Can't go wrong with them, Great alternative to a Fender!

I wonder if the OP ever decided on which bass to get.

The passive 5-strings I've owned/own which fit the criteria are German & Pro Series Warwick Corvettes, a Yamaha BB1025X, and the Gibson EB5. My favorite sounding out of these was the Yamaha BB1025X but all three sounded good to me.

So I finally broke down and bought a Gibson EB5, but I think the pickups are out of phase or something. It sounds weird. More to come
