Paul Jackson Bad Pocket???

I know I'll be flamed for this, but over the years I've listened to Paul Jackson, it sounds to me like he has bad pocket and poor technique. Listen to Hang up you Hang ups, Actual Proof, Spank a Lee, Palm Grease and many others. Maybe my ears just aren't big enough, but he sounds like he just doesn't get the groove. Can anybody talk me down?

Most of what I've heard him do leaves me somewhat cold to.
He gets the groove but seems to be pushing time a little( to my ear anyways). Maybe that's what you mean?

I do like some of the headhunters stuff and other things he has done nonetheless.:)

I think you guys have showed commendable restraint here. Well done, all of you. The OP hasn't been flamed, just lightly toasted. :D

Paul Jackson's playing grooves like crazy, of that I'm certain. Maybe the use of the term "pocket" is the issue here? It seems to mean different things to different people.

Wow.
There's much displaced Funk goin' down with a Headhunters' groove.
Jackson & especially Mike Clarke are drinking from the same pool...maybe you're hearing their displaced rhythms & thinking someone has gotten "off"?
As far as "poor technique"...Jackson?!?! C'mon, as long as some of those tunes stretch out? Try playing any of those grooves with poor technique.

Not only does he have a good pocket and good technique, Paul Jackson is one of the top 5 pocket bass players in all of recorded history of earth. He is probably my favorite electric bass player and his pocket can change my mood from dark to bright. He played the most demanding funk music I can think of. No one can out funk him in his prime. He is Mr inventive, Mr solid, Mr bad ASS fingerstyle bass. Mr freak of nature on the bass. Everyone is scared of what he played w Herbie. I know I am!

Okay, let's make the assumption that Mumwup isn't yanking our collective chain here to pull a fast one and have a laugh on us. We'll assume the OP is posing a sincere question - he is AWOL as of now from his own thread since his opening post.

Perhaps we are in need if better info here... OP - What is your idea of playing in the pocket? We need a reference point for what you consider pocket. Give us a few examples.

+1

This does look like a big prank to me.

Thanks to all for the feedback. I listened to all of the examples. Don't misunderstand me, I think Paul Jackson is funky, he clearly supported many complex grooves, and I think his playing was/is contextually appropriate.

My comments about his pocket are related to pattern. Listen to the other musicians in the examples I mentioned and some of the ones you posted. The other musicians maintain funky patterns within the complexity of the groove. Paul Jackson, while funky, makes subtle changes that for me do not enhance the pocket. One person mentioned "stretching the groove." Perhaps that is it.

Herbie is amazing. Listen to him hold a 'comp pattern within a complex groove. Paul is clearly a monster. He just doesn't project pocket to me.
