I'll take a shot here-My comments about his pocket are related to pattern. Listen to the other musicians in the examples I mentioned and some of the ones you posted. The other musicians maintain funky patterns within the complexity of the groove. Paul Jackson, while funky, makes subtle changes that for me do not enhance the pocket. One person mentioned "stretching the groove." Perhaps that is it.
Not only does he have a good pocket and good technique, Paul Jackson is one of the top 5 pocket bass players in all of recorded history of earth. He is probably my favorite electric bass player and his pocket can change my mood from dark to bright. He played the most demanding funk music I can think of. No one can out funk him in his prime. He is Mr inventive, Mr solid, Mr bad ASS fingerstyle bass. Mr freak of nature on the bass. Everyone is scared of what he played w Herbie. I know I am!
Well I'll respect your right to an opinion even if it's wrong.Herbie is amazing. Listen to him hold a 'comp pattern within a complex groove. Paul is clearly a monster. He just doesn't project pocket to me.
I got into his playing relatively late, I'm sorry to say. He definitely is an influence, in as much as he's been so "influential" just about anyone who's ever played anything remotely funky is playing in a genre that he has helped to define.BB-
...I just checked your influences ('cause I know you have been around TB for a while; your avatar is easy to remember)-
Hard to believe you missed out on Paul Jackson.
I think what the OP is saying is basically that he doesn't really dig Paul Jackson's playing/sound/style. Just not a fan of Paul Jackson. Which, I guess is ok.
It is true jazz-funk in that he improves the groove as well as the notes. He does not lock down mechanically, he locks down on the essence of the groove.
I'm guessing you meant to write "he improvises the groove" ?
But yeah, that's one of the things that to me makes Paul's playing so amazing: He's not just grooving on a short pattern or brief motif; he's grooving on an ongoing dialog with the drummer. It's almost a through-composed line, but it's still propels the music forward with its stone-cold badassedness.
Paul Jackson NOT in the pocket? Inconceivable!!
