I have had a similar problem with a Foundation before. In my experience it was due to the curve in the tuning post. The pressure on the string forced the winds to slide up the post, and reduce the break angle over the nut. You may be able to fix it by unwinding the string , then rewinding it while applying pressure down on the winds. If this doesn't work try a new string and don't cut any off the end. This will result in more winds forcing the string lower. Later Foundations fixed this problem 2 ways. The post are straight cut so the strings don't slide up in to the depression, and they also used a bar string tree that holds down all the strings except the E. Hipshot makes a really nice tree like this that allows you to slip the strings in place while tuning.

Hello friends, after reviewing the nut and see this properly and also check that the string does not hit on the first fret. I decided to buy this morning Hipshot 3 strings. I'm waiting to arrive in a few days. When I installed the Hipshot will inform you.

Yeah the tapered tuner post is a pretty lame idea, it draws the string winding toward the center of the post, instead of toward the bottom where it belongs. Straight posts work better and easier for keeping a good break angle.

on most of the older models it is triangular (and only touches the D and G strings)...i didn't notice that yours was missing in the video, your new hipshot part should certainly take care of the problem!

Triangular retainer is the same one as the T-40. The 3 layer TR covers are also T-40. The third from the left has the same tuners as the T-40 and is probably the oldest Foundation pictured unless the tuners were changed.

I bought a 90's Peavey Foundation Bass for $100 off Craigslist. Absolutely love it, it is my new main axe. I am searching for more on Craigslist and eBay.

Also bought a 80's Peavey Patriot guitar for $100 at a pawn shop. Took it apart and cleaned it up. Set up the action and intonation today. I absolute love it as well and it sounds great through my old Peavey Basic 60 amp!

edit - one more "before" pic of the six stringer. A kid must have owned it, it had silver paint all over it including on the head stock over the logo. Red paint on the volume/tone knobs. I accidentally took off the black stock paint on the knobs. Oh well...

Hey guys! Just got a Foundation 5 from craigslist! Its definitely one of the more recent models but I havent gotten to date it yet. I like it a lot but there are a 2 small things I noticed. The first is that the neck pocket was a little large so there is a small gap. The other being that it is decently neck heavy...

The neck is solid so the pocket doesnt really bother me (should it?), but I was wondering if there were any tricks to the balance (like lighter tuners and a heavier bridge etc.). Its a light bass so if I could get the balance sorted out I think it would be and awesome feeling and sounding bass! Ill post back with the serial # and pictures when I get a chance

A small gap is normal. It allows for manufacturing tolerances that include sanding and paint thickness. A neck that is a press fit in the pocket can crack the body due to the different expansion/contraction rates of the body and neck during temperature changes.

My new Foundation 4. $100 at the Rose Bowl Flea-market. It needed some TLC. Got it home and adjusted neck relief, action, replaced pots, and jack, shielded control cavity, cleaned and shined. I stopped by the new Hollywood Peavey store, but they failed to have knobs, so I bought Carvin knobs next door (not pictured).

It has some "character" but the neck and frets are in great shape.

what kind of body wood it is. Would they have used poplar on transparent finishes?
My pic ability is zilch presently but I'm sure one of you guys knows sight unseen.

There were some sunbursts in that period that were maple, there were some that were poplar, and there were others that were ??? It isn't that we don't want to be helpful, it's just without seeing it we are just speculating. To be honest, even if we saw it most of us could not tell. This was one area where peavey wasn't particularly consistant. No matter what wood was used, Foundations sound and play great. My suggestion is to not worry about it, and just enjoy.

My Foundation 5 had unmarked pick-ups. Peavey support swore they were Super Ferrites.
