These are referred to as the transition pickups. They came in 93 through early 94 Foundations. I believe they are just repackaged Superferrites. I own both and I can't hear any difference. Some players swear they are not as aggressive as earlier SFs, but I just don't hear the difference. Besides, I prefer the later VFL style Foundations to either of the others.

I bought myself this Peavey Foundation for CA $180 today. I don't know much about it but for the price, its a damn nice bass.

Hey! I got one of these too! Gnarliest awesome rock sound I've ever gotten out of a bass. Can't wait to get another four-string fretless (begrudgingly returned the loaner that got me on this slippery peavey slope in the first place).....quick question though...what's the closest thing one might find to the 5 that retains the 4's string spacing?:eyebrow: Anything peavey, or...?

I know this is responding to a post that's several years old, but this is the Foundation database, and this information should be helpful to someone who finds it in a search.

I had this problem with both my Fury and my Foundation S, but the foam actually ate away the finish on the Foundation. I scraped most of the foam off, and then used household spray cleaner and a rag to get the rest of it. I ended up having to wet sand the finish on the Foundation down with a block to level it, then re-polish it. There was plenty of finish on it to allow me to do it, and it looks brand new now. I'm thinking of lining the case with fabric to keep this from happening in the future.

Got this '93 last last week for $85.00. Needed a basic set up and the body has been well broken in-lots of little dings and scratches.It is my first five string and I love the neck so far.It has the "transition" p/u's.Not sure if those are actually SF or not.

88 foundation per peavy it left factory on 8/19/88. It was bought new by my friends brother in law in my home town in late 88 or early 89 he can't remember. My friend then bought it from him in early 90's I learned to play on it 13 years ago and then got my own bass and now finally talked my friend out of it. So it's special to me. Peavy says its a Poplar body. Rosewood fretboard and its a CP White (custom pearl). And I love it.

Well I'm getting my bass back tomorrow. My tech sent me a few pics. He said the bass is incredibly well made. He really likes it. Frets were all perfectly level he cleaned polished the frets and fingerboard, truss rod needed an entire turn to bring the neck in line. Adjusted the bridge and fixed the intonation. He put on my DR Neon white strings. I can't wait to get it back. For a 13 year closet queen it turned out great.

Zombie thread but I had to.
Got a 1994 Foundation with original case today at work($220). Put on new strings at lunch and did NOTHING else to it. Played it tonight at home via living room rig(bi-amped Bugera Nuke>PA 18 sub(0~180Hz)+PA top(15+titanium horn). Sound is amazing. Pickups don't have "Super Ferrite" stamped on them like the school's blue-green one do BUT Peavey factory guy who looked up the serial number to ID it said that they were the same. It does sound the same as the local high school's bass that has SF's.
I got this after repairing the local high school's Foundation and liked it a LOT when I was done(neck reset with press, Stew Mac truss spacer, lighter strings, etc). One picture for now, maybe more later.

hiho,It seems it,s the same TRC as the T40 .
I have one for it,mailed Peavey and they sent me one free of charge-take note other bass makers,that,s customer service.Just never got round to fitting it,keep it spanky new for a special day.
My next one will be black n maple with black headstock-ooooh pass the wet wipes please.
The Forum 95 is a musicman with mids,got musicman as well and it,s got the same size neck as the musicman but feels faster to play.
Anyway got sidetracked a bit -want a jizz bass get the one with the logo,want a great jazz style bass which plays a dream,sounds great and 30 years later still plays like a dream even though it,s mojoed,save yer money,get a Foundation and with the money you save get a really good amp n cab and have fun.
Oh yes they are great and completely underestimated.

Just got this '92 foundation from a pawn shop. Whoever had it before that had it set up lefty so I had to replace the nut and do a whole set up, but it plays great now! It's got a weird head stock, but everything checks out. There's a pic with my '96 fury.

I have a Foundation which I bought last summer on EBAY. SN 02429802 I bought it after researching these fine basses on this forum. It's a nice bass but it has one characteristic that puzzles me. There is a difference in PU output volume between the neck and bridge pickups. The volume heard through the amp is higher with the neck control at "ten" and the bridge at "zero", than when the neck is at "zero" and the bridge at "ten". Is that a normal condition for these Foundations? I thought they should be at equal volume. If it is not normal, anybody have an idea about what might be wrong? Far as I know, the electronics are stock.

Edit: - I also notice that the overall volume goes down when both pots are set to "ten"

My thought is that your pickups are probably out of phase. If you reverse the red and black wires on either pickup the issue may be solved. Additionally, it sounds like the bridge pickup is mounted too low in comparison to the neck pickup. These are the two obvious causes of your problems, but there could be others.

Thanks for the ideas. I made a quick check of the PU heights and found that indeed the bridge PU is slightly lower than the neck. Not sure how they adjust, but, I'll check it out and see if adjusting helps. I also checked the Red wire "phasing". It appears to be correct. The red wires from each PU are wired in the opposite way (red to pot body on one, red to pot terminal on the other). I believe those are the correct connections - or am I wrong?

Wow, what a surprise. I never messed with PU heights before, but I should have! I've been able to contour the sound and volume from the PU's by varying the heights. To solve my uneven volume issue, I lowered the neck PU and raised the bridge PU. I also lowered the "G" string end of the PU's relative to the "E" string to better balance the sound. Originally, the "G" string end was very much higher than the "E" string end.
