Hey all. First Post.

I have had this Foundation S Active('89 I think) for 15+ years sitting in my closet getting older. I took it out today just to take a look. I love the skinny neck and overall sound it puts out. There are problems with it though.

The 1st volume knob works fine if a little scratchy.

The second volume knob is useless until its all the way up and then it cuts on. It's terribly scratchy. Also when I use this pickup the bass makes continual popping and clicking sounds. Almost like dust on a record would sound.

The neck is a little out of line. I suspect a turn on the rod would fix this but I dont have the right tool. It also has this screw at the base of the neck to adjust the height of the neck at that point.

I'd like to keep the pickups and replace the pots to fix the scratchy sounds. Is there a kit or parts source to replace the guts? Pics attached.

Sweet Foundation S!!! It reminds me of my '87 Dynabass a lot ^_^ I didn't know that WD40 would work but I know electronic contact spray should clean up those pots if thats all thats wrong with them. ^_^

And I posted a pic of it in a couple other threads but YES *happy dance* I FINALLY GOT A BLACK/ROSEWOOD/BLACK HEADSTOCK/SUPERFERRITES Foundation....yeaman!!!!!!!!! Its a 1985 that is just WOW!! The back of the neck and headstock is not black but maple -- a real dark maple. It just looks so cool!!! Its not mint and has some mojo here and there including a couple of hits on the edge of the headstock but I could care less about it. I think it adds to it. It has such a nice seasoned feel to it. Too bad I can't dig the mojo on my Dynabass...

Well I just recieved the white foundation 5 that I won a week ago. Wow, after a string change, this thing is freakin nice! Way too nice for $150. It came with the original case but it has some major funk in it. Theres a bit of mold in the corner and it swells funky. Anyone got tips for cleaning it out? So far my plan is to go in with one of those steam cleaner things with soap in it and clean the fur stuff and clean the mildew with bleach but if anyone has any better ideas let me know.
By the way, I thought mine had super ferrites from the auction, but it doesnt. It has the one that look like SFs but only have peavey written in small letters on it. They arent the soap bar pups. They sound good, but does anyone know anything about them? Also I just found out that its from 94. Ill get pics up sometime

Definitely use contact cleaner on the pot. Remove the knob then spray the pot turn several times and repeat. If this doesn't work any long shaft 250k or 500k audio taper pot will work. The truss rod adjustment tool for gibsons will usually work on older Peaveys. If you can't locate one, you can use a 5/16 socket(must be 1/4 inch drive because any larger will not clear the truss rod slot) with an extension partially inserted. You have to put the socket in first, then angle the extention in part way to clear the edge of the slot. Don't adjust the micro tilt until after you have adjusted the truss rod.

Thanks for the info. Will try the contact cleaner first. I have heard that WD40 will corrode some non-metal parts in a pot.

My current pots say Tø10A25K. Can I replace with regular 250K pots? I have seen some 25k pots around. Is it different for active pickups? This bass has a 9volt battery in it.

As you can see the wiring is an old mess. I have no problem replacing everything but the pickups. Any suggestions for specific pots, caps, configurations to go with these pickups?

Also what does "bleeding trebble" mean? I keep seeing this in my searching.

I am not sure of the capacitor for your actice bass, but typically the higher the capacitance the more treble roll-off you can get. Peavey typically uses .022 or less. I have switched mine to .087 because I have found the voicing on the pickups tend to be very trebly anyway, so I wanted more roll-off. If I were going to guess I would say the same would be true for your bass. It shouldn't harm anything if you do switch it, and if you have a good local source you could switch them out until you find the tones that suit your needs.

Yea that headstock is factory but its real tiny on top. Thats just weird :p Maybe its a fluke or was there a whole run of these made with the little tip like that? Looks interesting to say the least and I don't know what you are waiting for but I'd be all over that monster if I was still in the market for an older Foundation!!!! Grab it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
