The IPR1600 is 1/3rd the price of a PLX1802...1/3rd the power as well.

QSC PLX1802 is rated for Stereo: 900W/ch @ 2 ohms, 575W/ch @ 4 ohms, 330W/ch @ 8 ohms. Based on my math that doesn't equate to 1/3 of the power, at least not pure wattage.

What is 1/3 is the weight. QSC is a "light" 21lbs. The Peavey a mere 7lbs.

My pleasure. I was pretty sure quite a few people would be interested in the guts of this bad boy.

I've enjoyed seeing some comments of people scheming to put a preamp in the chassis. Genius idea! A plastic chassis costs $40. For a mere $259 (retail) more you get a sexy aluminum chassis with a nice power amp included!

My buying decision for this particular amp was:

1. I have a QSC RMX that weighs 40lbs. It's ridiculous. I've been wanting to replace it for a long time.
2. MusiciansFriend often has killer 20% of coupons. Watch the Hot Deals forum.
3. I've always enjoyed my Peavey gear. It's rarely the best, but it's always very good and lasts forever.
4. Considering the output power, 7lbs, and the fact it cost less than a used RMX after discounts, you get a 30 day return policy, warranty, etc. and it was hard to say "no".

How does it sound? The manual gives some impressive signal to noise specs, but in my limited experience Class D = hissy. I'm interested in how noisy the amp is with the volume cranked and no input signal.

There's no additional noise between gain attenuator at min or max with no input connected. Same as with my QSC RMX.

Correct. No support for bridged modes.

there is high pass/full range/sub switch on each channel. crossover freq = 100Hz

For Bi-amp you have to take two speakon's into 1, if the cab is a 4 pole speakon.

I have to love the breaker. I still can't believe amps still ship with fuses.

Looks like an easy, if warranty voiding fix. There even appear to be extra holes on the PCB.

But yeah, lame.

The 100hz only X-over is near useless, as well. Nevertheless, still a tempting amp.

I am guessing that a lot of lead sled production is being kept alive by economies of scale, and the inertia of established designs. Big toroidal power transformers have relatively few applications in new design outside of audio, and might start getting more expensive as factories tool over to meet demand for the parts in Class-D amps. Also, the designs will mature and establish themselves.

I have always considered Peavey to be my gold standard for when a technology has arrived for good.

But that wasted space... it's just begging for a bass preamp to go in there. But I guess that's what their Class-D bass head will be.

I don't really think that is all that useful a feature. If I'm sending 200 watts to the compression driver I probably want 1000 watts for the woofer. If I'm sending 1000 watts to the tops I probably want 2000 watts(or more) for the subs. I've never, ever, had a situation in which I was running both sides of the same power amp to a biamped speaker box.

I'm getting one. This, with my F-1X, will give me good power in a rack combo that will weigh approx. 13 lbs.

Agreed. Way more likely to have biamp feature in the preamp anyway.

Lack of bridge mode is a way bigger shortcoming.

Not for PA, where it's the standard. As for electric bass, bi-amping is of little value, and the same applies to bridging.
