Peavey IPR 1600 - INTERNAL PHOTOS

Maybe it is time to redesign the piece of cardboard. Given that it is 'cheap' make one that goes 'low' over the whole board or appropriate parts, with appropriate cut outs, before collecting the airflow into the fan.

There has been a post on the AVS forum where someone did some rudimentary bench testing using sin waves and had the amplifier 'trip' or otherwise misbehave down at around 11Hz single channel.

I wasn't able to locate the post regarding the 11Hz trip. Please paste the link in here. I'd like to see if it was a DC protect trip that did exactly what it was supposed to, or if it was something else.

If a customer is having thermal problems it is for some reason other than the design of the air deflector. At four ohms, thermal issues are virtually impossible to invoke. Cooling only becomes a potential problem at two ohms if the duty cycle exceeds normal music.

The fan does not "collect" the air. It blows into the deflector. That aside, it's better to discourage customers from removing the top cover and risking shock. Peavey would hate to tell the lawers to include MortyBoy in the various lawsuits.
 
Apparently the original post in this thread exceeds the time period that I can edit it. So here's my latest update, mostly photos.

First, a long time ago someone requested HI RESOLUTION photos of the board to review. However, the unit has been in my rack all this time and I haven't pulled it until today. I used macro mode on my camera, no flash, and a spot light and came up with what looks to be some pretty nice photos you can zoom in and read labels, etc.

I've been using the power amp at bedroom and practice space volumes consistently since purchasing it. Currently I push it with a BBE BMax-T preamp. I've found, as many report, running the power amp full open and controlling the level with the preamp master knob produces the best sound overall. It seems more thick, punchy, and more low end when run at lower volume levels when setup in this manner.

The IPR has given me no trouble and works great. I'm still currently running Channel A, though for an hour or so I ran a patch cable from A to B to feed both channels the same signal, then connected A to my Accugroove El Whappo Jr and B to my old Peavey 410TX so I could A-B the two amps against the same input signal. I sold the Peavey and kept the Whappo Jr in case you're curious.

I'm likely to start using channel B at band practice to drive an 8ohm SUNN 4x12 cab for vocal PA while using A to drive my bass rig. I don't expect any issues except maybe blowing up the SUNN cab on accident since they're old and low wattage.

Lastly, I tried briefly to tame the 22 LED lights (yes, 22 blazing blue LEDs) inside that blare when the unit is powered on. I tried black duct tape which worked fairly well, though I removed it as the LEDs do generate a fair amount of heat and I generally dislike the longevity of tape solutions. Eventually it'll dry up, probably sooner due to the heat, fall off into my amp, probably get sucked into the fan with my luck.

So I tried rubbing some Sharpie on it which tames the light a good amount but doesn't totally black it out. To really tame it I think it'd need some really thick, solid black paint of some sort. Probably an enamel. I'd be concerned about what would happen to the LED with all that heat trapped in there, but I'm going to assume the worst case scenario would be the LED dies as opposed to the entire power amp.

All said and done I'm not sure the Sharpie really made much of an impact. It seems less obnoxious, but it could be just my imagination.

I've never felt my IPR get hot or even warm to the touch.

In contrast my MESA BB750 get really hot. Not burn-the-flesh hot, but it's shocking now hot that bad boy gets after a 1 hour set. Not saying it's a problem, just comparing.

My biggest take away with the IPR is really still SHOCK. It's like you're holding an empty chassis with nothing in there. It's lighter than any other rack gear I've owned with the exception of a MAM Warp9 I just sold. All of my preamps I've owned weigh more! My plastic 4U rack case weighs more. It's really just mind boggling.
 
but the only thing that's going to fail in that is the fan.

Mine did. The fan failed. I didn't notice, it just went into temp protection during a rehearsal. At first I thought I had toasted a driver, until it came back on. Sigh of relief. Had a peek through the cooling openings, I noticed the fan wasn't running even while it just went into temp protect mode.

Contacted my vendor, ready to send it in for a warranty repair. Thought, what the heck, pop it open and look inside. Perhaps the fan is not connected or whatever. There was some 8 volts on the fan connector, so that was not causing it. Turns out there's another little connector were the wire actually connects to the ventilator motor. Pushed it a little with a small (isolated) screwdriver and lo and behold it started spinning again.

The usual disclaimers apply. Don't do this at home, high voltage inside.

As I was walking out of the store with my IPR1600, I handed it to my wife and said "They sold me an empty box!" I had to stop her from going back into the store and raising hell. It really is that light!

And...for those who keep asking what it sounds like: It sounds like a power amp. A decently designed power amp doesn't add any "sound" of it's own.
 
IPR1600, with the circuit breaker bypassed, both channels driven will do 530 watts at four ohms @ 1kHz or 470W @ 20Hz until the power supply MOSFETs eventually overheat. I'm guessing that to be around five minutes. I say around because it depends on the MOSFET and I'm not going to blow up a bunch of power supplies just to get an average for a condition that isn't allowed in the design. With the circuit breaker back in the circuit, the max two channel 1kHz sine wave power is 350 watts for as long as you have time to sit and watch it. If your intent is to see what the individual channels are capable of, you can push them to clipping (>600W) for as long as you wish to stare at the amp. One channel does not affect the thermal performance of the other. The two channel limitation is strictly a circuit breaker limit.

At two ohms, the on resistance of the MOSFETs goes up which generates much more heat. At two ohms, long term single channel or dual channel performance ranges between 175 watts to 200, depending on the MOSFETs. The limit is thermal and not breaker. The amp is good for about a 22% duty cycle at two ohms.

120/240 operation is jumper selectable. We also do that on supplies up to the Crest 9200. Before you ask ....... the 9200 will run sine waves wide open at any load for several minutes before thermal shut down if the breaker is bypassed.
