Well, I was really excited to hook up the Mega for a test drive this afternoon. I bought a used 115BXBW cab with the intent of making some real Peavey noise. Unfortunately, there seems to be some serious issues with the head. Neither of the low range outputs seem to work, and/or the low range post gain doesn't do anything. The high range side does work, but to get any decent volume out of it, I used the following settings: 0 dB input pad, pre-gain at 7 (!) and high range knob at 7 (!), eq flat and bright switch on. Seems like what has been described in this thread that should be killer loud, and for me it was just "at home" loud. So, I am bummed. I have been having a rough streak with gear, I wouldn't have bought the BW cab if I knew what I know today. Not sure where I go from here. If only 1/2 of the amp works, and not at full strength, I'm afraid of the cost to fix it in Meridian. Crap.
Call Meridian anyway, it might be less $$ than you think. Mine was having a hard time turning or staying on and it finally failed. I sent it to Peavey and it was a $60 fix. Plus shipping, but the repair wasn't a big deal for a serious issue.
I haven't contacted the seller. Actually, I've never had to contact any ebay seller before. "Excellent gently used condition" was the description! I opened up the top this morning just to see if anything obvious was amiss, very filthy in there, but nothing obviously bad.
I would contact the seller. Most eBay sellers want to do the right thing; if it has problems, perhaps he/she will refund part of your money. I have done this for buyers, and sellers have done it for me. In fact, one MegaBass I purchased from a pawn shop in eBay arrived damaged. It was packed improperly and arrived with the front rack ear bent and a knob twsited off. The guy worked with me and refunded part of my money; I then fixed the unit myself. Your seller might refund some of the money you need to get the unit working properly.
If you do go Meridian, you won't be disappionted. The techs there are great. A complete overhaul/refurb of my Mega was about $200, but it could be less for yours. It's also cool to have this American-made head worked on in the US for its 100,000 mile checkup!

Well, I feel a little better about the situation today, and it's thanks to Steve and Count Bassie. As I mentioned, I have never had to dispute an ebay purchase before, and I probably would've just ate it in this case too, except for advice to pursue the seller. So I opened a dispute, and offered to settle for keeping the unit with partial refund. Since I paid $140, I figured $90 and me keeping the Mega would be a good deal for me (well, depending on repair options). Seller agreed. So, at least I have a partially functioning Megabass for $50, which is a pretty ok deal. Still wish it was as sweet as promised, but I have some $ to offset repairs. I will be sending it to Peavey tomorrow, and see what they say. Thanks again for good advice, bros! -Brad
Bthebass- Please keep us posted on what happens. For the first time in over ten years, mine didn't fire up. I may be sending it to Meridian and it would be interesting to see how you have fared, what it costs, etc.
Good job! That seems like a square deal. The silver lining is that you'll get a clean bill of health from the folks at Peavey. Let us know how it turns out. It truly is a great gigging head--totally worth it.

I am keeping the Megabass "as is" for the moment. I can't seem to make up my mind to send it in for repairs, and 1/2 of the amp seems to work fine. Here's a photo of my (new today 
) setup, might have to post this on mini rig of doom thread too! Anyone else have a head that might weigh as much as their cab?!

Well no wonder it's only 1/2 working...you need to turn the knobs to the RIGHT, man! You know, the other way!

Oh, I got a PM about the rack bag in this photo. It was a TKL and I bought it in the late 90s. Not sure if they make one like this any more. Honestly, the Mega was a little heavy for a bag/strap. I found a used thermoplastic rack case on eBay for my Mega, and that thing is perfect.
I built those cabs (a 2x8 and 1x15). And that's my beloved '64 Jazz--all of it long gone. Still, I think I like my current bass and setup even better.

When I bought my Mega, it came in the same type of bag. I swapped that for an SKB case as soon as I could. That bag was terrible. :scowl:
So, I really needed a way to at least throw the MegaBass in the car, and didn't want to buy a rack:
