Peavey rigs, UNITE!

Here is the video I did comparing the two amps. The sound clips start at 29:00 minutes in. Thank you for watching!

This is GREAT !!! I was going to go to the time stamp you recommended, but the history of them was WAY more interesting. You did a great job of narrating it.

My Peaveys:

It's unreal how load these things are...

About time I finally posted here.

When I think of what first inspired me to make music, I think of the pointy Peavey logo. When I was in kindergarten and my dad was still alive, he took me out to a rock show and I thought it was the coolest thing. I started doing somersaults on the dance floor, and dancers made room for me. I remember the lights, and that logo, and blue knobs, and the singer having everybody clap for my dancing. My dad must have put in a word. I remember telling, and illustrating, this story in my kindergarten class. In high school, I finally got a Mark III head, pointy logo and blue knobs and everything, and while I liked it well enough for a time I didn’t realize then how good I had it and traded it away for who knows what. Happily, more than 20 years down the line, I have recaptured a bit of that magic by acquiring some gear with that pulchritudinous pointy Peavey logo and that sound I finally appreciate properly.

I finally got this Mark IV head back after a bit of trouble. Thing was, the tech couldn’t find anything wrong with it! Whatever had caused the problem got corrected in the course of his routine checkup. Good for another 40 years! :bassist:
@definenredefine I almost suggested the cab to your right on your “recommend me a 2x12”thread. The price is certainly right!

All Scorpions, both rigs  the Black Widows get a lot of love but I rather like the Scorpions for bass guitar, as does a certain designer for Mesa who frequents the forum.

I love that rig. It's so loud and dirty!

Dude I would be all about that, except the amp I wanna put through it (GK MB500) puts out 500 watts at 4 ohms and most of the old Peavey cabs don't seem to be rated for more than 200 watts or so...but maybe for the 400???

I can’t say for certain it wouldn’t explode if you fed it 500 watts, but I have regularly run my Traynor SB500H into either—NOT BOTH!—of those old 4 ohm cabinets over the last year or so with decent volume, low end, and drive, and they haven’t exploded yet. (I have used a high-pass filter set somewhere between 60–90hz, to keep peace with the neighbors.) The Mark IV pictured, which was pretty much tailor-made for cabs like these, puts out 300 watts at 2 ohms; so they’re definitely good up to that. I remember some later Scorpion-loaded cabs rated for 400 watts with the Black-Widow-loaded cabs of the same era handling 700, but I do not know whether these older cabs can handle as much. I probably should find out

Peavey is the BEST !!!!! They do all the same things the other guys do, like Mesa, only we (USED TO) pay less for it due to the name. Now, the "test of time" did it's thing and Peavey USA proved they are the best. Name ONE brand that's MORE reliable than old school USA built Peavey ?

I've posted my Peavey rigs multiple times but it never hurts to do it again.

Main bass rig: Peavey VB-2, two Peavey 210 TVX cabs connected in series, and a Peavey 412 TVX.

Main guitar rig: Peavey 3120 head, Peavey 412MS cab , and Peavey 412M cab

Pretty overkill for the house but most of it was inexpensive to put together so I threw caution and hearing to the wind!. The Peavey Mace VT head and Mark IV heads are currently disconnected until all 3 can be seen by an amp tech.

For years the Max stack was two 4 ohm Avatar 2x12s. Got a 2x10 for smaller gigs with the MiniMax and would just stack it for outdoor gigs, so sold one of the 2x12s. It was still stupid loud.

Very nice. I tried to buy a VB-2 before they got so scarce and crazy expensive.
I used to have a Mace combo, which was actually a pretty good amp. As was my Heritage VTX. And I never had to worry anyone stealing them. Made of concrete. :D

Thank you! Figured nobody would want to watch that part at all, just hear the sound samples. It could be patents, but yeah no amp company has made a similar lightweight tube amp. Gotta give props to Peavey as a company. They had the balls to invent a better tube amp that was less weight and as powerful as an SVT if not more.

You just embodied a joke I heard years ago, "two 2x10s are lighter than a 4x10TVX." In reality the two 2x10s are heavier combined, but are far easier to move individually for sure!

Maybe it's tied up in patents, but I've always been surprised no one else ran with the idea the VB's use of an all tube head with the lightweight transformers.

It's sad to see all these rigs (I had more than a few myself) and to realize those days are long gone.

Could be patents, but both the VB-3 and VB-MA are low production amps. The VB-MA about 50 or less were made per the Peavey CFO. I heard this 3rd party so who knows. I doubt many had a chance to try them in the music store. I also beleive many did not take them seriously because it had Peavey's name on it. Boy were those people wrong!

Love my MAX700. I got the MiniMega as a light weight alternative. Just had to make a breakout box to wire the 4 ohm cab in series for 8ohms to the MM.

I think there are cars that weigh less than the 410VBX.

When the PV Max 700 first came out and I had just started flirting with bass, a guy who owned a music store in High Point, NC had a 700 on top of a new PV 6x10 and even as a dumb lead guitarist I thought it was the sweetest bass tone I've ever heard. I'd been a Classic 50 fan for years and swore I'd have a Max one day. And eventually did. Still kinda chasing that tone.

Later, I heard, but did not play, a VB-2 into a 6x10, and was in love all over again. Lotsa folks listen with their eyes and never gave PV a chance. They have done some amazing stuff over the years. I love the old PV stuff and that's why I'm a bit vocal about what they've become. My recent experience with a MiniMax head, a Max 150 12" combo, my Elf head, and the MiniMega issues have really put a bug up my butt with Peavey. They were almost a given in many backlines for years, like the older Hartke HA series, Classic 50s or Fender Hod Rods for guitar and old 1x15 Combos or TNTs or Hartke HAs for bass. Sounded great and you couldn't kill them if you tried to. But today I feel it's not the same, based on my personal experience, and what I've read here.

Edit ... I lost out on my first audition on bass with my Max 700, just one of the Avatar 2x12s, and a huge pedalboard quite a few years ago when a friend of the band showed up with an ancient, beat to death 'silver-stripe' TNT combo and a ragged Squier P-bass. That guy was a friend of the band already, and you know how that goes. But he crushed it. Sat perfectly in the mix and played only what the song required. And that old POS PV was sweet. :D

I've got a fondness for Peavey gear, and have owned plenty of it. The Alphabass is on my list of "some day" purchases, I just need to find one. Here's my current Peavey rig, planning to gig with this later in the month:

If you ever get a chance to grab a TVX 412, do it! Your back might not thank you, but your audience will :)
Did you see this gorgeous specimen in the classified to go with your amp ?
Yeah, the AlphaBass sounds as good as it looks. There are quite a few Peavey bass amps that went under the radar like the AlphaBass, The Firebass 700 / Nitrobass are amazing. They are built like tanks and all SS, so no tubes to break, yet they sound so warm. The list goes on. I want to try a 60/60 all tube power amp.
Those LED's look SOOOooo good. They should've offered that feature @bassguitarist85. Peavey enthusiast and collector. Cool !!! Sorry, I'm ADHD'ing it and trying to get a lot of info into two sentences. @Raw N Low - Your collection is amazing. The "Bassist" rackmount is like an SVT. Nearly indistinguishable.
