Yea, they pulled it off the floor as soon as I put the money down on it. Do you own both the toaster and the blade pickup versions? Do they sound different enough to own both?

Glad to hear it. The condition on that one is great. With the original case you're saving a couple hundred bucks on that deal!

As for pickups. I prefer the warmer, fuller sound of toasters but I'd happily play either.

My late lamented 78 was much hotter than my 83. They were in fact like two different basses, the 83 (i currently have) is lighter, more Jazz sized neck, and the the body is more comfortable,less sharp. I would still love to have my original back!

I got to take the T40 out of prison and play it again today, but this time I brought a strap and stood up, it may be a no go for me. Playing it sitting down, the weight didn't bother me much at all, standing up with it slung over my shoulder was much different. The other thing that really bothered me even more than the weight was how sharp and angled the fingerboard is. Again, didn't really notice this sitting down because I was holding it differently. The angle really cuts into my palm in an uncomfortable way. Anyone know why the fingerboard has such sharp edges like that?

The sets I’ve tested gave different readings on my meter. So, there has to be some difference.

The fingerboard issue can be fixed easily. Also, maybe you should shorten your strap so the bass sits on you the same when you stand up?

The weight... not such an easy fix :-/ .I have recently gotten a 4” wide strap from Gecko leather and it greatly helps disperse weight.

I had a feeling it would be. Measuring DC resistance isn't a very good way to test pickups.Take a reading/remove the magnets then test again,you'll get the same numbers.

HP changed 2 magnet toasters to 1 magnet blades for cost cutting reasons,that missing magnet meant a higher wind count (explains the DC readings) to bring up the output.

One thing folks never touch on when discussing toasters vs blades is pickup height.Those exposed blades are,by their nature, closer to the strings. Compensating for the slight loss of highs due to the higher wind count ?

Local GC just got this in yesterday but a guy was playing it and I had to leave. Went back today and it was still there, couldn’t pass it up for $399, includes original case. Appears to be a 1980 model from the serial number and looks to be in good shape. Strings look and sound like they are from 1980 too lol, I’m sure it will sound even better with some fresh strings. I’m completely new to them but have thought about one for awhile if I found one I could play and the price was right. Get to pick it up in 3 weeks!

Hey mbell75...With our T-40's through our Rumble 500 combos we should pump out quite a bit of air in this, the Peavey T-40 Club, and the Combo Club too. Maybe we could play outside both clubs and take the proceeds of the sausage sizzle for payment loll (sausage sizzles here in Australia sell for $1 each outside shopping centres, polling booths, school fetes etc etc and boy are they tasty. A BBQ'd sausage shoved between 2 slices of bread with BBQ'd onions and a splash of tomato sauce (ketchup) lol...we'd make a mint)
From memory I think you bought a Rumble 500 a month or so ago?
I hope you love the T-40. I do, but buy a nice 3" or 4" wide strap and the weight will be more manageable.
My 1979 T-40 isnt as heavy as some and weighs in at 10.8 lbs (closer to the lighter end). Persevere with the weight with a good wide strap as the T-40 is an amazing beast. (I use a Walker & Williams 4" Superwide strap with the T-40).

Tuner screw question: I was transplanting tuners from a neck that was developing an unfixable split in the neck to a healthy neck. Took my time unscrewing each tuner screw only to have two of the four shear off part of the way out. Any suggestions on next steps? Looks like I may not be able to grab much of the screw stuck the tuner shaft. Take it to someone who might be able to drill the old screw out somehow?

Yeah, it surprised me. They weren't terribly tight, just a little slow going. Guessing they hadn't been adjusted since the early 80s and don't seem to be made of the best metal. After I got the first one transplanted I though about taking the screw to a local hardware store and finding better quality replacements.
