That's indeed a Sienna burst, and very fetching it looks too. You don't see too many of those. The naturals, in comparison, look like plain ash, although they do have some brownish grain filler.

What kind of deal are you considering? Since somebody already verified that one is a sienna burst you'd probably want to grab it in the right deal.
Separate note-I should be able to join the club by the weekend. Mine arrived at my buddy's house today and I should get it Sunday at rehearsal.

This was offered to me at what I would consider to be a fairly high price for a T-40 $450. I'll see if it's still available tomorrow, and then, make an offer. I had my P up for trades (I think I may have mentioned this), and one of the trades I was interested in was a T-40. This was to be for my son who was looking to satisfy some GAS, and with the season giving here, well...
My son went for a Gibson Grabber, so that's his Christmas gift (he went in half on that). But I've always been impressed by the level of apparent quality in the T-40, and I've such good things about them. My son wondered if they'd make a good recording bass.

$450 is not too high for a T-40 right now.
When I bought mine a year and a half ago it was $400 and most good condition ones were going for between $350-$400 on The Bay.
Given the fact that the T-40 has become even more popular and desirable since then I don't think $450 is too much to ask as long as it is in very good condition.
I put the rise in popularity of the T-40 in the same category as the rise in popularity of vintage Acoustic Control Corp stuff. Very undervalued for a long time, but gaining in popularity because of how well build and good sounding they are.

I just paid $275 for a natural/maple which seems to be far and away the most common varierty. The sienna burst doesnt seem to appear all that often. If I had the budget, I'd probably do it.

I have been playing drums for over 25 years, but this T-40 I own is my first venture into playing Bass. Clearly this is a versitile instrument, in that you have a lot of control over the pickups. I understand that the sound you prefer is a matter of personal choice, and also depends on the style of music that you play. That being said, Could you folks suggest a few different settings that I could use as a starting point?

very soon i will be picking up the T40 the Ross Valory used on tour circa 1979. Im not a big journey fan at all, but im super pumped to own a T40!
Most popular would be the "P Bass" setting.
Put the pup toggle on the neck pup, dial the tone to about 6.

Four piece body, but who cares
After a few days I felt I was like disappointed in the bass, I got to "understand" it, and well, I must say, nice buy
I must say I am disappointed with the tone with both pickups on full. Balancing the volumes more to the neck or to the bridge pickup is kinda hard, since there is huge tonal excursion in few millimeters of turning one of the volume knobs, and then nothing at all (probably faulty pots). Bridge pickup is great with distortions, really cuts through the mix and retains note clarity, probably best with the tone rolled of a bit. But the neck pickup... god, it's terrific. Full, but not boomy, it still sounds articulate enough, nice biting treble as well. But what I love the most from this pickup is it's growl. Man, it's fantastic.
I'd say it's not very P-ish, Ps are kinda warmer and much less growly. I still need the need for a P (and I'm thinking to move the bridge pickup in the P position, and use the two pickups one at a time. Or better, but a third pickup in the P position... maybe a Darkstar
or a Jack Casady bass pickup but in due time...), but still, very nice bass.

Hopefully, tomorrow will be MUCH less eventful and I'll be able to go to rehearsal and get my natural/maple T-40.

Just rehearsed with my Peavey T-40 yesterday.
Just great, it sounds nice and "big" through distortions, and it has a nice, coarse but biting tone when clean. The bridge pickup cuts through the mix beautifully, the neck pickup stays a bit more in the background, but superbly supports the band (plus, while I expected it to be kind of "dark", it's even more trebly than I thought, and I like it that way).
It may be a bit too nasal with the bridge pickup, though, and not enough attack on the neck pickup for some things, this is why I will be switching it with my chinese-copy MM, but I never expected that it would replace it altogether, so I'm OK with it anyway

I will sadly be leaving the club as my T-40 will be leaving me to go live with another TBer,I shall definetly pick up another in the future but for now so long fellow T-40dians.
