Peavey Tour VB-2 All Tube head. need comments!

I had the chance to play a VB2 at GC a while back. I thought it was a great sounding head and a good value. I played it through the Tour 410 and then through the Tour 115. Then I played through both. It was then that I was reminded of how good a 410/115 stack sounds, something that I should've never forgot about.
 
Ellefson is playing a proto. It was actually made in the US (I made it!), but the chassis artwork says "Made in China" because that's where it was going to be made. Every one we've sold has been made in the US.


About the reliability issues...

The only issue we've had is a defective run of fuses. Our fuse vendor changed the fuse on us and we built about 100 like that. We have since recalled those units, so problem solved. The fuse was on the tube supply, so when it goes, the unit will power up, but no sound.


About the power supply...

The power supply is over-designed. The amp will put out 300 watts with the right tubes/biasing.

I wonder if that was what happened to the two I ordered? If it was, I'm very sorry to hear it 'cause I was honestly very excited about the amp.

Ruby EL34BHT. These are not easy to come by--sounds really good!

Ruby EL34STR. You will get 280 watts, but they sound thin.

The amp is biased medium to get the 225. You can re-bias and get 240 easy with the stock tubes. 225 is just the best all around compromise between performance and reliability.

BTW...the Electro Harmonix 6CA7 works great in this amp, but they are stuck at around 230 watts even if you run the bias up.

I would imagine stuffing some 6550/kt88s in there, and running them hot will get you 300 watts!

You can do that in theory, but you have to modify the amp.

I've had mine since March. I ordered from Musician's Friend. I gigged with it, literally, a couple of hours after taking it out of the box. I got through about half a set and it went down, much like what happened to pedro. Mine was an output tube. Got it fixed and everything's going great!

It's been very reliable since then, playing pretty much every weekend, 4 hours a night. I keep my settings, which i like very much, like this-

input volume about 9 o'clock
bass about 3 o'clock
mid about 3 o'clock
mid switch @ 200 hz
highs to taste
output volume around 2 or 3 o'clock
resonance and presence around noon.

It's pretty much the bomb. I have said "I'm never getting rid of this" about several pieces of gear over the years (SVT's -vintage and modern, V4B's - three of 'em, Mesa Buster 200 - what a hunk of crap that was, etc.) and I think I can honestly say that about this amp.

It has a great breakup and sounds great in a classic rock/country/blues setting. I don't play metal, and I don't slap, so I can't really say anything in that regard.

Pedro. Go get another one, dude! Warranty, Brother!!! Can't say enough good about it. Everyone run out and buy one!

4. For you techies, one distinguishing feature of the VB-2 is it's HUGE power supply. The power transformer is ENORMOUS (bigger than an SVT's) and it has 4x the capacitance on the plate supply as a 70's SVT. I haven't put it on my test bench yet (I'm an EE) but I don't think that plate supply sags at high output levels. The output transformer is also very large. I have VB-2 schematics in pdf form for anyone who's interested.

really?!? i thought they said on the namm video that there was no power tranny and that they OT was considerably smaller because of running it at some different class. how is it supposed to be so light if it has a big chunks of iron? they also said because of no PT you could have smaller caps in the power supply and take some more weight out through that. could you take a pic of the trannys and guts of the amp? and i wouldn't mind seeing a schem of the amp. you can email it to

Really. HUGE power transformer. I have a VB-2. Big output transformer, BIGGER power transformer. VB-2 weighs 54 pounds.
