Peavey VB-2 vs. The World

I don't think gear snobs frown on peavey gear as much as they used to. Peavey still makes a ton of budget gear but their upper end stuff is just as good as the other large companies. It's a matter of do YOU like the tone. As far as reliability and customer support they are among the best. I have tried many combinations of gear.... Many different basses, cabs and heads. I can and have achieved the tone I want through different basses and heads of different brands but the bx115 black widow cabinets can not be replaced (to me). Too bad they are so heavy but I haven't found another cab that gives me that tone. I've been using a Peavey BAM head for a few years now and love the versitility but if a vb-2 popped up used in my area I'd jump on it

Doesn't that cab have a Black Widow in it? They're supposed to be user repairable. You should be able to get an inexpensive cone replacement and keep on rocking the setup you have. That is, unless it's not suiting your volume needs anymore. Maybe after repairing the driver, you could get a second 1x15. That might be easier to transport than a big ol' 2x15.

slap a kappalite 3015 HO in there... DONE

No such model; probably means 3015. The usual comments about "blind" speaker replacement apply, although the 3015 is more tolerant of random cab size and tuning than most speakers. Pricey, though... will cost more than he paid for the cab.

OP (pbillaa) said this is a neo cab. Peavey does make neo BWs, which have field-replaceable baskets. But I'll bet this is not a BW. More likely, it's a chinese-built speaker like they use in their low-end PA cabs. Invalid Link Removed

I'd call Peavey for replacement/repair options.

And yes, he probably needs more speaker.

It sounds awesome with the gain cranked on the clean channel, I use that setting all the time. It's thick, creamy, gets somewhat dirty (not overly dirty) and is just old school sounding. You cannot blend the channels. The head is worth owning, it sounds fat like a tube amp should. However, with the resonance control, I find I can get a fat sound, yet quick attack.

This is an old school sounding amp but with the amount of controls you can get modern tones with it and the right bass setup. I use it for old school dub sounds, p bass with flats. Throw a J into the mix with some rounds and change the mid selector switch and presence setting and you have slap tones.

Again, cannot say enough about the VB-2. BTW, I've never switched the stock power tubes before, but I would be curious to what 6CA7's sound like.

How is the overdrive channel sound? I don't like full blown distortion, but I do like some good dirt. Can it do a geddy lee tone?

From what I can tell it can do most tones with ease. I just got the tour 410 to go with the vb2 and it just continues to surprise me every time I plug in. I really can't imagine needing more. I don't really use the drive channel, I just drive the clean channel with a boss odb.... Sounds great

I can never find one of these in my local stores. I would luv to here one. Just heard a brief little clip on you tube. What I like is it has all the features I would like and the power of 225w seems just right. Anyone tried it with the newer peavey 810 or ampeg 810?

Hey bring the noise, I haven't used it with an 810, but I do use it with a sealed Ampeg 4x12 cab and it's super loud and punchy. It truly sounds like a tube amp should or would. I love it, and it can cop SVT tones.

I play the VB2 through a mid 90's Ampeg 810 and am very pleased with the different sounds/tones I can dial in. The owners manual comes with different settings you can use (classic rock, funk, finger style, etc.) and I've tried most of them and different variations. It's a great amp for my needs and truly fits the bill for nice tube tones. I have no desire to switch out tubes or any of that nonsense. The only mod I did was to have the internal fuse mounted externally for ease of blow out changes which under normal circumstances will never happen.
