Oh, and another thing, if people do not enjoy playing and making music, how come musical instruments now sells more than they ever sold in the history of mankind?
Here in Canada we have stores like Long&Mcquade and Steve's Music opening new stores left and right, and Luthiers, like Montreal Guitar, have wait list that is calculated in months.

While I agree with your overall sentiment, I’ve gotta say that only L&M is growing. The Steve’s locations are all getting smaller and smaller every year and all the mom & pop shops across the country are either going out of business or getting bought out and replaced by L&M - the Walmart of the Canadian music scene.

Yo, buddy, ever been to to a bluegrass jam? Not everyone there is "really good at an instrument" and there IS no "production software" - just people creating handmade music with actual instruments. Sometimes it's pretty damn rough. And we have a ball.

Its one thing to view his statements as “perspective” . He ( the CEO) sees the task as tedium, not as creation in its purest and most enjoyable form. Another perspective is he simply doesnt grasp the true joy of creating from beginning to end. It’s not a capability he possesses. So he spouts his opinion, and awaits the tumult he creates. It’s kinda the world we live in today. Creating arguments by spouting inflammatory opinions, and sitting back and watching the storm.

It’s really tragic. Creating arguments for the sake of entertainment, marketing, eyeballs on your video, Likes, follows, etc. Such a sad place to be growing older in.

There’s also the chance, although not likely, that he’s uninformed, and thinks he’s “smarter” than he actually is. It’s pretty common nowadays for the uninformed to spout their opinions aloud, and be irate when challenged. Again, sad times.

Honestly the idea that it might somehow be "better" to push a button and let the AI excrete a music-like sound product, than to take a guitar in your lap and strum chords and sing (or take up paintbrushes on a sketch pad; or write your thoughts in a journal; or assemble a cabriole-leg end table..) - simply reveals the shallowness of thinking of someone who believes that. Wisdom is not the same thing as knowledge.

Comic book artist here. I’ve been following the AI issue for years. It’s bad.

Creativity is facing an existential crisis, with its primary predator being the worship of technology and “Progress”

There are many reasons why this technology is bad for humankind, and for the world in general. I won’t preach about it. People use any rhetoric imaginable to defend our addiction to novelty and insulation from pain.


The next time you see a little bird in your yard, consider this: what if we could just replace that bird with a robot? All of the benefits of birds, but none of the drawbacks. The perversity and absurdity should be evident….

I think we are over our skis on a lot of technology and have been lucky so far, there are so many ways AI can go south in the wrong hands or even just the super greedy. AI can be a real benefit, its the humans running it I don't trust.
People should really watch what they put on the internet, I don't think it would take AI long scrubbing your Facebook page that maybe your password is your cat Fluffy.

I'd say the business has always had 'Play Like a Pro FAST' products and gimmicks as long as I can remember, whether Baldwin 'Fun Maker!' organs or Roy Clark 'Big Note' guitar methods. Hip Hop appropriated pieces of recordings, AI can now fashion bits whole cloth. Music via what seems like shortcuts to trained musicians has been around forever.

Go to any grocery store and the percentage of pre-made, instant, frozen, everything in one box is huge.

Yet the sales of cookware, appliances, organic groceries, cookbooks, and online cooking lessons and cooking videos prove that lots of people still want to learn to cook (and grill and smoke!) properly.

Instant cooking isn't going away, nor is cooking by people who do it 'from scratch'.

I think music will do the same.

As an amateur magician, I find a lot of similarities between good musicians and good magicians. The best ones enjoy every part of the process including practicing. Most people want to play an instrument, and after the very first few attempts they give up because it's hard. The true lovers don't give up because practicing is fun for them.

That guy who wrote that is just a wannabe, and not a true lover of the craft.

Let's just say if I met this guy on the street I would behave very badly.

To be honest, this guy Mikey’s stupid statement doesn’t even warrant a response.

AI is misunderstood and is actually here to help us because artists/musicians/creators secretly don’t like doing what they do. Everyone knows we’re only in it for the money and the chicks.

Sure, there are people who don't like making music. My hunch is that they also won't like making music with AI.

Could the same thing be said about people who don't like writing? I think that's different, because there are a lot of people who don't like to write, but need to do so because of their jobs, or as a means to some end. A great deal of written material exists for those reasons. Most of it is never read. It could be written by AI.

Making music? Or working up a road map and developing that idea? There's a difference.

One of those workstations with all inclusive keyboard etc would be really cool.. except I don't play keyboard. So my experience is always been digital 8-track recirding gear... and I put on the drums (hand percussion), put on the strings and whatever and create. But computerized workstations I'm just not familiar with. I think they're pretty cool and they've reached this point of technological maturity that it would be a lot of fun. But I don't have to experience on keyboards and I'm just not willing to devote hours to manuals that would probably be needed in order for me to get thoroughly immersed and take advantage of the technology.
