People wanting to use your rig

1) Never lend out your good rig again! You set a very bad precedent last night and you need to put an end to that NOW!
2) If you really want to be nice, they can drive over and borrow your old rig.

I only lend gear to family and I only share with others when I'm on-site to see that it is well attended too. It's just not worth it to let your gear out of your sight. It sounds like you you are being taken advantage of by a singer who just assumes that you're ok lending out your amp.

Gear can be rented, and it's not hard to find an old Peavey Mark series head and cab for less than $300 on craigslist that will work for most any gig and is nearly indestructible. Serviceable bass gear can be quite cheap, but good gear is not. With the wealth of cheap used gear available there's NO excuse for a bassist to not have his own amp.

I never, ever lend my gear, nor do I ever borrow gear (I will rent if I need it). The rare few people on this earth that I would unequivocally trust and lend my gear to happen to be people that would never ask to borrow it in the first place (that's just the way they are, like me). I work too hard for the money to buy it, I look after it and depend on it to be in top working order and available for me to use at all times. No one else cares anything about my gear. (ya', I have a strong opinion on this! :cool:)

I am friends with the singer. The guy using it is a really nice guy who plays guitar but just plays bass for this one gig they do on halloween. I dont mind lending them my older rig, i just dont feel like dragging it out. Also, i let them use my good one last night for practice b/c it seemed like they were in a jam. I will be seeing the singer tonight and i will explain that they cant use it. I may just go get the head actually. Kinda debating it.

Ok, so if you don't loan then your rig, will they be totally screwed?

Yeah, that's a tough one. You don't want to seem like a d*ck, but also, it's not really your problem.

If it were me I'd probably loan my rig out but would expect something in return. Maybe dinner, gas money, etc.

Question,....did you work hard and save up for your gear???? I'm assuming you did.

Question two,......why let a bum who doesn't care enough to work hard and save up for his own gear use and abuse yours????

I haven't read the whole thread but I feel you should start as you mean to go on. If you are uncomfortable loaning your equipment out then don't. You paid for it out of hard earned money. You don't owe your singer a favour. You just play in the same band. If the stuff gets damaged who do you think is going to pay for the repair??

I wouldn't let anyone use my rig while I'm not there, gig or practice. Cheap or top gear doesn't matter, you need both and undamaged.

What you did last night is ok as a one-time favor, you don't want them to take it for granted.

Oh no, I wouldn't. Renting an amp for one day is affordable enough, and it comes with insurance if sh!t happens. Putting your gear and friendship at risk because they're too cheap to spend a few bucks is just ridiculous. You set a bad precedent loaning your good rig, I would't do that again if I were you. Because you agreed once, they'll most likely ask you again, and it will become increasingly awkward to say "no".

Nope, nope, nope.

You know i said from the beginning that NOBoDY uses it. I respected that he called insead of just using it but I honestly am not happy with anyone using it as most you seem to understand :D

It's a very awkward situation, and you kinda feel bad for having to be the one who turns down on the request and look all grumpy. I borrowed my old Ashdown Mag 300 Evo II twice at gigs where the bands had a joint backup and both times I had to take it to a technician because it was screwed up. Since then I simply resigned to engage into that lending gear thing.

In addition to this, I had a gig last night actually, and the band before us ( who's guitar player seems not to give a s... about other people's gear ) broke all of the valves of a 5150 amp for not turning it off properly, and that is a really headache !!
