People who don't give "likes"

The other day I was scrolling through a thread where a lot of people were pitching in to help a member, and I was looking at the likes to see what advice people agreed with most.

It occurred to me that the OP didn't acknowledge any of the feedback with a like.

I then realized that I don't believe I ever saw that particular member "like" a post .

Liking a post is absolutely not a requirement for TB participation, but to me seems like the, "polite?" thing to do?

I started me wondering about the personality of such people, cuz I'm interested in such things. Are these the same people who never say thank you when someone holds a door for them? Are these selfish people? Completely self absorbed? Are these people who are full of pride? Are these people who simply hate the idea of "likes" on the internet?

I don't know.

Do you "like" posts.

Why or why not?

Do you have any thoughts or theories regarding people who never "like" posts?

I could see that getting out of hand. Thanks. And whether or not likes matter is a good question. I think so, as I'm a member of another forum that has no such system. A lot of times I want to acknowledge that I read someone's post without writing out a response. The "like" makes that doable. It's also nice to know whether or not someone acknowledged something you may have put a lot of time into when responding. As far as whether it's actually "liked" or not is a whole nuther story.

Like many things on the interwebs, some overdo it and others under-do it.

If I post a question, I usually 'like' most of the replies, just as an appreciation for someone reading and responding to my query. I also tend to 'like' certain members' posts, especially if after a while you detect similar thoughts on certain subjects.

I do it to show appreciation. If someone takes the time to post a comment, I certainly can take a second (or less) to push the like button.

Liking every post out of politeness is the same as a standing ovation.
The standing ovation was originally I sign of an absolute superlative- perhaps a once in a lifetime performance.
Nowadays the standing ovation has been watered down to simply mean, yeah, I was there, the cellist made it thru the show without falling off her chair.
We have to save SOMETHING as a superlative now that belly button lint can be consider 'Awesome'.

On a serious note, and I’ve s^*+ to do today so this will be my only post (well, besides the ones above), receiving likes releases a little drug in the brain, causing a sense of euphoria. Before long, it becomes an addiction. Every like received makes the person feel a bit better about themselves. In a basic sense, it’s merely positive reinforcement.

As for giving likes, I think there are a variety of reasons why someone wouldn’t give likes (I almost made a list). It is definitely an interesting question. I minored in psychology, so I definitely hope this turns into a decent conversation.
