People who don't give "likes"

Liking every post out of politeness is the same as a standing ovation.
The standing ovation was originally I sign of an absolute superlative- perhaps a once in a lifetime performance.
Nowadays the standing ovation has been watered down to simply mean, yeah, I was there, the cellist made it thru the show without falling off her chair.
We have to save SOMETHING as a superlative now that belly button lint can be consider 'Awesome'.
I agree, except when someone is responding to something I posted directly. I think it then serves as a simple thank you for responding.

Though that can become daunting in a thread like this :).

I will probably stop liking here now cuz I have things to do :).

I'll not only 'LIKE' responses to a question in appreciation of folks taking the time to respond, but I also try to respond to their response too!

I'd wonder is 'liking' a generational thing or associated more with people who use Facebook more?
On that point, I agree with @Lesfunk that it'd be great to have a few more responses available...sometimes a 'like' just doesn't cut it.

I feel like if I give out likes too liberally, it creates an expectation that I’m subsequently in violation of if I forget to like someone’s post, so I try to only like things that are especially funny, moving, beautiful, or uniquely helpful, therefore preserving a standard that a “like” is special.

Meanwhile, if I’m soliciting advice, I’ll sometimes try to give a like to everyone who contributes, at least at first, because, you know, thanks for lookin’ out, but if the topic starts to get long I’m not gonna just *like* everything for six pages. The trouble is that creates an awkward cutoff point where I have to decide it’s appropriate to suddenly stop giving participation likes, which is enough of a moral conundrum to turn me off of the concept altogether.

Also sometimes I just straight forget because I’m an awkward space-person.

Ok.... I think I doled out five likes before I reached the reply box. And I’ll give an honest response with few yucks.... Yeah, I give likes. One particular thread here.... I like everything. It’s a fast paced thread and it’s the only way I know I read em. BUT..... Funny thing about these likes. They have become like heroin to a junkie for me of late. I made a conscious decision two weeks ago to step away from TB a bit. I Caved this morning and brought it up. Fifty odd alerts. Half of them “likes”........ But I stray a bit. Yes, I open doors for ladies. Give my seat to others, help broke down cars on the road. I am a polite guy and I will like most any post that gives me knowledge or a grin. Both I could use plenty of.

Agreed, in infinite totality.
For belly button lint to be awesome, you better have a very large jar full of it.

I make “Peanut Butter Kisses” in my belly button (similar to the Hershey ones, but with peanut butter... yes, I have a “deep-innie”)... First one of the day usually has a “lint trophy”. If you happen to score that one, you may not appreciate it, but you WILL be in awe!

Thought about this more. I participate in a coin collecting forum set up just like TB really. Snarkiest group of opinionated old geezers I ever seen. I think I might score one “like” a week with those old farts....... So based on that my analysis is that bass player are just all around nicer folks..... Or we may just not have anything better to do. Not sure which.

You've never been on the Les Paul forum. They only gives likes for maximum snarkiness, causticness, and rudeness. Actually, they hate everybody, inanimate objects, and the majority of pets.

I give a like to something I genuinely like.

Whenever I start a thread, I try to remember to like every post. Why? I genuinely like the fact that you took the time to answer my question, even if I completely disagree with your answer. I usually don't ask questions hoping to get only answers I agree with (can't learn anything that way). But if you took time to share your thoughts I appreciate it.

I also treat this like I do my non-cyber interactions. I don't have to agree with you to like you. If you are thoughtful, humorous and kind when it counts, we can be pals. By "when it counts" I mean that you can be a little jerky during everyday interactions. But if you take serious issues seriously, and either help or butt out when someone is in pain, I can accept your overall snarky nature with regard to unimportant things.

I use the like button to express agreement or appreciation. The appreciation can be for something that helped me personally, something that I thought was particularly well written, or just for something that made me LOL.

When the like button was first introduced here, I will confess to feeling a bit hurt when I saw how many likes others were getting that I was not. It made me feel less valued at first. Then I noticed something. Sometimes I would make what I thought was a particularly good post and get no likes, but sometimes I would make the silliest, stupidest, most offhand post, and my alerts box would blow up. So I decided that it didn't matter so much.

What we need here is a “dislike” option or maybe a “your f’n joking right?” Option

Or maybe “not this crap again” option
At the other end of the spectrum, If I hear a beautiful, strong piece of music, or read a well written, heartfelt or instructive post, or see a pic or cartoon that is genuinely funny or thought provoking, I would love to have a ‘Triple Like’ option...sort of related to the Standing Ovation train of thought.
