I'm finding that if you ignore the people posting things like "stop whining about whining" or describing slap as non-musical then there is some good conversation to be had in this thread

Do you actually hear people telling you to stop slapping? I find it hard to believe that other bass players would, and if they did, easy to ignore, no? And if it’s not bass players asking you to stop slapping, you might want to listen to them, unless you’re Chuck Rainey.

Yeah, it does happen. I mean... I've been given real, actual criticism for choosing to play with a pick and not fingerstyle. For the record, I am proficient in both and use both regularly... some people are just way too concerned with things that they probably don't need to be concerned with.

But which happens? From other bass players? Other band members? Music directors? Family members? Venue managers?

It kind of sounds like you really identify with slapping, like you are being unfairly persecuted. Is that happening?

Sometimes people will ask me to turn down, and depending on who they are and what are the circumstances, I may or I may ignore them. I might even turn up. This situation seems very similar to me, but it sounds very different the way you’ve presented it, so there’s something I feel I’m not getting here.

I love me some slap bass! But I also think it's easy to fall into that rabbit hole of focusing too much on it, when in most people's situations, slap bass is going to be a very small piece of the "real world" bass playing pie.

But it's a big world and a free country. Play what you like

I’m so fed up being asked to “slappa da bass” at gigs, that my standard response is: “Sorry; no can do..But if you want me to, I can ‘slap ya face’ ?!? … For free. “Slappa da bass” comments are for morons.. Even if they’re drunk/stoned/etc.

Slapping - in general - quickly makes me yawn. However, there are some really cool cats out there, though and I bow in the dust for their technical (and musical) achievements. Davie504 is foo*in’ amazin’, just to name one.

Yeah, that's the internet for you. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fuddy duddy about it and most of those internet players have more talent in their pinky than I do in my whole body, but I think a certain generation of players think that super flashy slap chops are what define a good bassist. I'm sure that's what gets the clicks.
