Good point.The funny thing is that the bassist admired by Rudd's character in that move doesn't even slap!
My takeaway from this thread is that audiences tend to like slap bass more than other bass players like it.

Personally, I find it ironic when people whine about people whining about people whining about people whining about slapping.

How do we define what is or isn't whining? Is it defined as any statement that's critical of, or contrary to, a specific subject? If that's the case, then I think we're all "whiners" to some degree.
I've never met a person who wasn't critical about something, or who didn't criticize someone for being critical about something. It can easily become an endless, pointless argument.

Some people in this thread are exposing their limited exposure to music outside of rock and pop.
Of course, the OP wasn’t merely critical, but expressed his annoyance with people expressing a different opinion than his. Which he is entitled too of course, but so are those other people.
I’m sure he didn’t mean for his post to come across as such, it was probably meant to be a light hearted little rant, but this is Talkbass: things explode in your face without any warning or mercy!

In the proper context, slap ‘n pop can work really well. Certain situations call for it, no doubt. However, when it’s WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY overdone, it is absolutely annoying.
The OP compares slapping to distorted guitar tones. This is a poor analogy.
Imagine a guitar player doing nothing but two-handed tapping and dive-bombs, like all night long. It gets old after a while!

Most slapping complaints originate from the music store showroom, not from the music itself. I might enjoy listening to Level 42 now and then, but I really don't want to hear arrhythmic fast-twitch patterns with an error rate higher than 20% as punishment for picking up a new set of strings.
Never heard anyone "Whine" about slapping.
I have no issue, with it, in fact, I admire it as one heck of a skill.
Kind of the way I feel about it, and I have to slap every now and then if the songs call for it. I remember reading a quote from Verdine White, where someone asked him why he didn't slap more than he did. he replied something like, "I only do it when I think the song calls for it. The guys who do it all the time, all sound the same, you can't tell them apart." Or something like that; I'm obviously paraphrasing. Of course, this was back in the day, not recently.
