And yet nobody has a problem spelling Fender, go figure...

Well, I've seen several ads on Craigslist for a "Finder" bass. Yes, you read that correctly.
As far as the OP, I couldn't agree more. Craigslist is the most prominent place that I've noticed the usage of "base" instead of "bass".
I am so ashamed, especially after my previous post in this thread. My son in Afghanistan received a package. It is a bow he ordered. However, since the package is big enough to be a bass guitar, I sent him a Facebook message asking him if he bought his old man a new bass. He said that he did not, but that if I bought a new one, he'd like my old one. I sent him a pic of one I have for sale. His reply was, "I'd love that base." I told him the proper spelling. He has made ridiculous erroes in spelling and grammar. He defends these by saying that he is in Afghanistan defending, among other things, our right to self expression. I tried to tell him that nobody will understand how he expresses himself if he doesn't follow the spelling and grammar rules.
God bless your son and he's lucky to have a father that cares enough to help him wherever he can.

Thanks, guys. He has since informed me that bass is a species of fish and that he is going to fix the language if it kills him. His teachers and I did what we could while he was in school. I do not blame his teachers for anything. They really went the extra mile.

Of course with that said, I now feel the need to correct you (just to keep in the spirit of the thread, you see, no hard feelings). You should have used capital instead of capitol in your last statement
Capital refers to a city which is the center of government, or has some special eminence.
Capitol refers to a building used by a legislative body. When capitalized, it is referring to the building where the U.S Congress meets.

In fairness to 96, he's right. This IS actually a spelling error thread so I guess it's the appropriate place to get miffed about spelling errors. It is all kinda silly though...ain't it?
I hear with the right ones, in the right places, with the right words one can unlock the secrets of the universe.
After reflecting on this thread a few days, I decided I love people who spell bass, base. I keep hoping to find that advert on cl or kijiji that says "Old Finder Base" for 200 bucks. Base is now part of my search term lexicon.
It is noteworthy that probably the most recognized genius in history had atrocious spelling. He believed that so long as he got his point across, spelling was inconsequential

When someone asks what kind of bass I'm playing, I tell them "A Human Base" B-A-S-E. Assuming they understand it's a bass, not a base. Sorta confusing to non musicians I guess.

He should also be angry at school systems with no music education programs to teach basic things like musical terms and basic music reading.
So using this logic, I could use horrible grammar, speak/communicate like a cave man, and that would be ok, because I would eventually get my point across. The problem is I really wouldn't get very far in life and people would think that I'm an idiot, even though I invented the wheel. There are a few folks who people give a pass to, but for most in this life, you are judged greatly by how you communicate. There are very few Einsteins.
