Pet peeve

Player shows up at either gig or rehearsal and says things like "...we had company all day!..." or "I've been up since 3 am...." or "I've been sick for the past couple of days..."
These are invariably code for "I'm not prepared, didn't practice and don't know the songs. I'm going to miss pickup lines, won't play the signature riff and I'm going to ask 'how does that one go?..' before nearly every other song."

This week's gig was worse than last week's and it's the same set list. Had to have The Talk afterwards...the one that says "it's all I can do to glue this all together and I won't keep putting up with it."

Irritating.

I'd normally say "Stuff happens and sometimes there are reasonable excuses" if the guy has one bad rehearsal or isn't prepared that one time. But if it's an ongoing thing it might be time to cut him loose, especially if multiple gigs were bad as a result of his lack of preparation.

As a drummer myself I will never understand how some drummers can forget their sticks, forget their cymbals (played a gig with a drummer who brought everything except his bass drum)..

My band plays the same 3 sets for the most part- Weonly add a handful of songs in months. For whatever reason, our drummer, just doesn't practice to improve the same things that he messes up each and every time. Like drum fills, intros, etc...

As I have said before- "People Just Don't Change." PJDC_
If it is repeat behavior expect it to continue 98% of the time until someone is fired or quits.

To add to the OP's original posting, I've definitely encountered the same thing, but also something
that is a step above. The "preemptive" excuse.

In other words, guitarist/drummer/whoever makes mention of some sort of "not feeling good" or
"busy this week" or what-have-you several days to a week before rehearsal, then
mentions it one or two more times in passing on the days leading up to rehearsal so, on the
day of rehearsal, when they are not prepared, they feel it's ok because they set up the excuse
a week in advance.

Different people have different priorities. Getting the correct blend of priorities in a band is every bit as important as skills, talents, & musical tastes.

FWIW, I wouldn't put up with it - I'd hire a replacement and tell him "no sweat, you can go home".

Old Saying. "Everything in life boils down to the R&R factor". You either have Reasons or you have Results. Have you ever noticed it is always the same people that have reasons for not getting a task done.

After an "event" at home, I had to have a catheter put (you know where) and have a bag strapped to my thigh collecting urine for over a month. I played the upcoming gig just like that. I didn't move around a lot but, I was there. Did pretty well if I remember correctly. No one offered to help with my amp and stuff. Thanks guys. Not with those guys anymore!

Just kicked our singer out of the band for this kind of BS.
Yes sometimes things happen, but when its every week for months i cant stand by and deal with it anymore.
Comes down to YOU saying YOU had time to be in a band.
Excuses only mean you didnt and you were wrong.

A nice one of mine, I got to experience yesterday. And I know better, but still let it irks me. Did a fill in gig. What time to I need to be there? 2:00. What's the latest I should be there, because I will be on time!?! 2:00. We go on at 3:00. OK. I'm there 1:50. Rushed my ass off to do so, of course. First other guy shows up 2:25. The rest at 2:30.

And since it was brought up, I had a rehearsal conversation with 2 guys from different bands yesterday, and I've come to learn that people really need to be clear with everyone they're playing with what a rehearsal is supposed to be. Some people think band rehearsal is the time to work your parts out. Those people piss me off, and I won't play with them anymore. I don't have to. What I've realized about this though is that there is no right or wrong to it. If you get 5 guys who all feel that band rehearsal is the time to get your act together, everybody is happy. Throw one person like me, who knows everyone is supposed to do their homework so they don't waste anybody else's time, and that's where the trouble starts . Again, that's why I stay away now from those people. It's so much more productive, and cheaper to get yer shiiet together before you get together with the group. And I always like to have a plan. Lots of people get to the studio and ask, ok, whattaya wanna do? Again, that's fine, if everyone is on the same page. I'm in a different chapter though. Maybe even a different book than some.

In short, another peeve of mine is people who think band practice is for their practice.

I'd rather someone be upfront and say "Hey, you know what? I didn't practice. It's my bad and next time I'll get it done" rather than cheap excuses. It's basically saying "I messed up, BUT IT'S TOTALLY NOT MY FAULT."

Just be honest. It's happened to me before. I ammended it, and came prepared the next practice.
