Pete Wentz Fender Signature Model? Really?

Haha, yeah, don't get me wrong, I'd never confuse the crowd at a Fall Out Boy show for the crowd at the Bad Religion and Bosstones shows I've been to, but this wasn't their mega-huge stadium show; just them on a (small) stage with ~300 very excited teenagers singing along, dancing, shoving, getting hearing-loss, etc. Kind of a "back to basics" thing for them. What's not punk rock about that?

the band on the stage.

it stands for **** **** up. They are a hardcore skin outfit and wear seminoles stuff. I have heard of an affiliation with DMS (Doc Marten Skins) but I was never a member so I can't say for sure. The local chapter in Portland ME was running a club called the asylum back when I was a kid where all the good Boston and NY hardcore acts came through. After the disaster at the Blood For Blood show (99 or 2000ish) and some other legal troubles they left the scene and some out of state bunch got the Asylum. It has been crap ever since. They were rough guys but brought in a ton of unsigned local bands to play with some fairly big names. Gangsta Bitch barbie played a show in their first (possibly only) tour, as well as Chimera before they got big, Shadows Fall (in their early days) and a few others. Sam Black Church and several other Boston area bands had huge FSU followings and they were there a lot.

lousybassplayer, you amaze me.

You don't know about Pete Wentz and Fall Out Boy, but you know stuff like this.

That is somehow very righteous, and I can definitely dig it.

Agreed on 1 thing, you don't have to have skill to have a sig model with your name...Just look at nicki sixx, and now pete wentz. Although I am a little jealous that wentz pucker is porking Ashley Simpson..even if she's a tad dippy, that's why I like em.

I don't think that any non-nationally known acts have the room to talk about his playing. If he really does suck as everyone says, then he wouldn't be as far as he is. Sure companies and labels look for image, but if the music sucks, then there is nothing that can be done about it.

Knowing that, I feel that for him image comes way before playing, both as an icon and on stage theatrics.

As a side note, has anyone used a mark hoppus for anything other than punk picking? Everyone says it sounds great, but why not just get a MIM, and that way it at least has some more versatility than the Hoppus.

If people can't see the attraction to a band like Fall Out Boy, you clearly don't remember what it was like to be young! Also, it might help to explain why your own project hasn't got off the ground; taking a few lessions in fan management, theatrics, and hooks from a band that's sold millions of records is a good idea (as long as you don't take lessions from their lyric writing!)

Know what else isn't punk rock? Deciding you are the final arbiter of what is and isn't punk rock.

Being judgemental is the least punk rock thing evar.

While I agree that its tough to decide what is punk rock, being judgemental has never been a problem for any punks I know or have known. I reserve my right as a human being and punk fan to judge whatever I want. I used to go to real punk shows when I was 13, and I was invariably scared %^$&less. If you are at a show where a game of spin the bottle is more likely to break out than a circle pit, IT AINT PUNK.

:scowl:

I don't even know what to say....

Post a list of your gold and platinum records.... Or.... name the band that you were in that was more influential to rock n roll...

But seriously talking about a real rock n roll motherf*cker like Nikki Sixx in the same context as Pete Wentz is disgraceful.

Carry on.

Sorry lindz I did not mean to ruffle your feathers, Nicki is a bad ass rock and roll MF'er just like you say. IMHO He is NOT one of the most technically proficient players. I can play his licks blindfolded.

He also has a really nice ovation acoustic bass signature series.

It used to be that you HAD to be a bad ass on your instrument to get a sig model. Not anymore it's all marketing and what sells.:rollno:

Define what is a bad ass though? Any sig model is a marketing ploy, but at least with Nikki's Gibson T Birds you get different wood for the wings, different wiring for the pots and controls, and a much cooler case. Of course along with the visual differences of inlays, details, finish, etc.

The Fender sigs are all cosmetic, no?

Either way, if you are just going to rate someone's skill based on technical proficiency, the people who are the "best" will 9 times out of 10 be boring uncharismatic snoozefests.

Question: What is used to measure the "skill" of a musician? Is Keith Richards a dud? I don't think you would find anyone in the world who would say Keef is a bad musician. While we know he is technically skilled (not saying he is the best) his most memorable riff is probably what? "Satisfaction"? Maybe "Start Me Up"? "Satisfaction" is possibly their biggest hit.... but you can play that riff in your sleep. So, does that make it bad or good? Make Keef bad or good based on that riff or those songs?

There is a lot more to Nikki's bass playing than the notes. Firstly, he wrote all the good Crue material worth anything in the last 29 years. Secondly, he was/is best friends with Tommy, and the goal of his bass playing was to sit in the pocket and tie the group together by laying down the driving force with "his friend", the drummer. Its something you appreciate when the drums or the guitar drops and the bass line is still going strong. Thirdly, and I would stress this more than anything, Crue was able to do something innovative and successful without needing to possess "extreme" technical proficiency. Almost everything is Blues-based but in such a loud and heavy way that had never been done before. Like the Beatles, the Stones, The Ramones, etc you don't need to be great musicians to make great music. Creativity doesn't require technical skills.

Back to Fall Out boy and pete wentz: these dudes possess none of that. Nothing is new and/or skillful, nothing is creative, and nothing is great about their music. Cookie Cuter Corporate record label bullsh$t.

I ahve heard only a handful of FOB songs. Some would say that means I have less right to judge, but I counter that with the fact that there is a very specific reason I haven't listened to more of that drivel.

Hey, The Ramones could barely play their instruments. Ditto the Pistols. Their music wasn't mindless radio punk though. They turned the lack of skill into a raw, new sound. FOB....not so much.

^^ Exactly.

****, the bassist for the Kings of Leon taught himself bass 3 months before recording their first LP. He has said in interviews recently (6 years after their first LP) that he only needs to be good enough to play what is in his head. I think this is an amazingly accurate quote.

The greatest technically proficient musician can easily play any genre, any musician's songs, any style, on any instrument.... but the barely-good-enough musician who can almost play what is in his head will still be capable of making better music.

It all depends what is in your head... not the skill or the speed of your fingers.

I pretty sure the same things about "All the same stuff, adding nothing, style over substance, no talent" had been said about the 'Crue back in the 80s, as well. But they're stuff has aged remarkably well, and I'm sure FOB fans will be saying, "This new band in 2018 sucks; its nothing like the ROCK that was brought by Fall Out Boy!" Its all a cycle; one generations ****** derivative radio-rock is anothers youth-cult to be revered for the rest of their lives! Nothing wrong with that; just admit it ;)
