But, gee, it'll never really sound like a Precision OR a Jazz Bass, soloing either pickup.

Duh . . . . . . .

I fell for this combination when I started playing 80's Yamaha BB's back in the day, and I've never looked back. For me, the best of both worlds, a Precision with a little extra articulation, or that back pickup Jazz burp with extra meat on the bone. What's not to like ?

I was quite surprised how great the Ibanez Mikro is for its price point. Nicely built, great sound and playability.

This is exactly why I love the PJ configuration. I like the classic P sound like everyone else, but it's the added high end from the bridge pickup that is just *chef's kiss*

...and a hardy "thank you," @Gloompunk, for all that you do! ;) :D

anything but a plain old P! :vomit: :D

i have 4 of 'em, and this is my newest, greatest-of-all-time, magical PJ:

audere (jazz 4B) preamp into EMG actives = anything! it's a lot of fun!
I just put the Audere Classic 4-band into my Aerodyne and it’s a beast now.

But this one is my best ever:

If you expect a PJ to performs as well as a P and a J, then you will be as disappointed as someone who expects a spork to perform as well as a spoon and a fork.

However, if you do not harbor these expectations (as I once did), you might find that a PJ could be pretty awesome. Today, I gig a pair of identical parts PJs and I could not be happier.

The reverse P on the BB2000 has that little something that when combined with the rail single-coil pickup in the bridge, produces a beautifully warm, sweet, harmonically rich tone - with a slight growl up top - that's assertive and yet sits in the mix quite beautifully. Mine's having an outing tonight at a local pub. Sound wise - it's more on the Jazz bass side of the ledger but IMO sounds much much better, and I say that having owned and gigged 3 jazz basses in the past: a '78, '62 reissue and a 2012 Am Std. This bass is simply on another level, and I don't why Yamaha doesn't reissue them in a modern version - they'd probably sell like hot cakes.

The BB3000 is the perfect utilitarian bass that'll cut any gig. It's currently my bass of choice in a small electric jazz combo. Simply put, it sounds great. Not quite as good as the BB2000, but the latter sets a very high bar indeed. That said, the BB3000 is a little more comfy to play.

This is a parts bass I put together as a pandemic project. The stock pickups were a little anemic (especially the J) so I picked up an Aggie HC set from the classifieds and I’m quite pleased with the results. I like it with both pickups full on, either one rolled off a little, or either one soloed. Lots of variety of tones and it sounds great with Fender 9050 flats.

I got my TH-PJ TH-PJ.png because I like Js, I didn't have a P, and I was interested in the brand. ( I now have four items from this catalogue (PDF)). Mine's trans. black, same as the one in the pic. It showed up under ideal circumstances and the deal was done. No regrets :)
What's your favorite PJ? What drew you to them? Or simply post a picture of your bass for us to see, I don't know. As long as it has a split coil near the neck and a single coil near the bridge, anything goes
