Guitar Center had an '04 Squier Standard P Bass Special in their used section for $99.00. It's the PJ configuration with the narrow jazz neck. Anyway, this thing looked horrible...it was a dirty mess from tuners to bridge with old mismatched strings and by the looks had never been set up. Loose, scratchy pots and an ultra hot tone pot. Turning it to the right produce feedback and distortion from every amp I plugged it into. But the body was free from major dents or scratches. The frets were clean, smooth and even and from what I could tell, the neck was near perfect.
I haggled my way to $79.00 and the bass followed me home. My initial thought was to give it to my daughter, who is just starting to play bass. After a thorough cleaning and a setup with new Super Brights, it actually played and sounded really good! The tone knob was better, but still a pain.
I'd been following the Geezer Butler Pickup thread, but never pulled the trigger on the Geezers for another P bass I have. I just liked the tone of the stock pickups. But I ordered them for this Squier.
After a small amount of Dremel work on the J cavity, everything went into place with ease! This little Squier gives my American P a run for it's money! It plays really well, stays in tune and the neck is better than what most basses out there have. But now the tone is freaking awesome! I'm really liking the PJ setup! I put a set of flats on it and it's just as good as the rounds.
This one is definitely a keeper. I'll take a number please...!
