PJ Club

Do y'all generally feel that the presence of the J pickup has an effect on the P pick-up solo'd? It may just be anecdotal, but the solo'd P on my PJ seems to lack a little *something* that my last few Ps. It's not a bad thing really, just different.

If you have two 250K pots in a VVT setup, the load from the volume pots is 125K, the equivalent of having your single volume Precision on 50%, so it will sound different. Replace your volume pots with 500K and the load is restored to 250K - now your solo P sound (and solo J sound for that matter) should be more or less restored...

yeah those EMG PJX sets are some of the best pickups I've heard. I had them installed in my ESP FB204 and man did they make a difference from the stock ESP pickups. Mine don't have a preamp, just VVT but those pickups cut through!

I've got EMG X pickups with a EMG X blend pot. I don't know what the values are but it seems to work perfectly. P and J bass Pickups soloed sound exactly like they should. The P pickckup is of course a lot louder. so I have it about 1/4" away from the strings and the J pickup is really close, like 1/16". That gives me a pretty nice sound at center click. At EMG they told me that it's OK to put the P pickup further away because the sound of their pickups is not affected by the distance to the strings. Only the output level.

Will be in the club soon. Having this modified into a P/J 5. Routing of the body for the J pup (Seymour Duncan SJ5) is complete and it's now getting refin'd in gloss black. Also having a tort pg made for it.

I really like the EMG ABC-X blend pot that I just installed. It allows me to keep the blend setting and change the vol really quickly without altering the relation between the pickups. If I set the vol to about 2/3 then, if I need more of the back pickup for a solo or a melody, I have a litlle extra to work with.
The EMGX pickups do have a preamp built in and they are quite a bit louder than passive pickups. So not turning them all the way up is no problem. And....no noise from the J pickup. How nice!

*I didn't list the aerodyne or special because I prefer the classic jazz look with pickguard.

Then what you're looking for is a "Non-Export Edition Aerodyne".

If you're still looking for a body-sans-neck, check out The Stratosphere. He/they usually have one or more in-stock at any given time.
(I always recommend buying directly through their website. They usually have some kind of sale going on for a limited time, PLUS they don't get hit with eBay's higher-than-ever fees.)

Would switching to a stacked pot twin vol/tone setup cure this too, or would the volume pots need to be swapped out in the stacked knob setup as well?

You don't really want to be using 500k for tone, so the problem would be, if you wanted volume and tone in each stack, finding a stacked pot with 500k and 250k tracks. If you were happy with both vols on one stack and both tones on the other, then why not - just get one 500k stack and one 250k stack. But the key is the 500k vols, so yes they will need to be swapped.
