Amen brother. I don't have anything against the single-coil pickup, it just doesn't work for me (in the sweet spot where the offset split-coil pickup should be!).

My first bass was a P/J soundgear, and I've never looked back. I have basses with other config's for diversity, but I find for my tone, a P/J is the way to go.
Here is my baby, a 1984 Ibanez Roadstar II - I refinished it and installed a Badass II - other than that, all stock.
As I said in another thread, as I've gotten other basses, I've put this one down occasionally, but whenever I come back to it, it reminds me what a Bass is supposed to sound and feel like. Still a main workhorse after many years!!

I guess I should update my entry here. Since I joined the Ibanez SR500 PJ left my ownership for a new and enthusiastic owner.
Much more recently I added an SX Ursa 3 MN 3TS, PJ bass to the collection.
(I've since finally swapped out the lousy OEM strings for D'Addarios)
Of course the Ibanez SR480 PJ has stayed put. No reason to change up a good thing!

My first bass was one of those, in red with a black pickguard. Great bass. Wish I had never gotten rid of it.
I refinished this so long ago, I'm trying to remember. I recently refinished one using a heat gun, but this one I'm pretty sure it was just patience and lots of sand paper & sweat! (it was originally burgundy; I just wasn't into it at the time) Then stained the front and back and painted the matte black "racing stripe" around the outside. (It's held up well considering that was my first refinish job - probably close to 1,000 shows and 10+ years, and I still love 'er!)
I'm almost positive Ibanez wasn't using Demarzio's as stock by 1984, and these are what they called their Super J4 & super P4 pickups. Perfect for the tone I prefer - big bottom, great clarity, and not too much twang out of the j. I usually just dime all the knobs & it sings!!

nice! but never saw spector curved like that...
Its a Kramer era Spector NS-2C...bolt-on neck, beveled top instead of contoured like typical Spectors, and is Korean made from late 80's-early 90's

That looks awesome! Btw, where did you get the black pickguard? I have the sunburst version of this bass, but want a black pickguard to match my other basses.
It's a standard P-Bass guard that I drilled an extra hole into for the 3rd knob. they don't line up in the exact position as the origional but it's working fine for me so far.
The other option I was looking at was ordering a Warmoth pickguard with no holes drilled and then lining the original up with it and drilling all of them to match

J neck. Feels awesome. I'm still a novice player and made the mistake of getting a 5 string to learn on. So many things that I was struggling with on the 5 string just seem to come naturally on this.
