I can get behind this pizza, but plain cheese or Margherita is not for me.

A Brooklynite blowhard I know claimed that New York pizza is better than the pizza in New Haven (my home town) without having ever tried any. I simply had my sister, who has lived in Brooklyn since the early '70s and is married to a Brooklyn native (an Italian American, as it happens), send an e-mail confirming that even her husband admits that New Haven pizza is superior.

And on the original question: go to Sally's Apizza (that's the correct spelling) on Wooster Street in New Haven; you'll see that the standard choice is a "tomato pie" (i.e., sauce and crust). The last time I took some out-of-town pizza know-nothings to New Haven, I ordered half-tomato, half-cheese (over their protests). They loved both versions.

That said, if I find myself in New Haven at some point, I won't even try to go to Wooster Street---just not willing to wait in line for a table for over 2 hours. I'd go insteat to Modern Pizza, on State Street. Or to York Side Pizza for the grinders. They're incredibly good. In fact, a friend of mine had his pick of residencies when he got out of Yale Medical School but stayed at Yale---mostly for those grinders, he told me.

Do adults really eat plain cheese pizza?
I thought it was only for children.

I'm 47 years old and that's all I get, or a Margherita like @OldDog52 mentioned. The Margherita ingredients have to be exact and top quality or it's not all that great of a pizza.
Since I am so particular about my Margherita pizzas, I stick with plain cheese at most joints.
We did a Margherita grilled on a fire pit with real mesquite from Texas when we were down there. Wow was that good.
Although we did do a brisket and smoked gouda (smoked on the same fire pit) with BBQ sauce on that same fire pit that was beyond amazing.

Putting together my order for pizza today, with seven toppings.
Coincidentally a pizza comes on the TV, & it's huge.

They open the box & it's just plain cheese pizza :meh:

I just had a cheese pizza. It’s better for eating less calories and fat by leaving them off. But still not really good for ya.

Sometimes I get one like “The Rutles “ song...”Cheese And Onion”
