Played an Orange at the music store..

At any rate, a 1001 is intentionally not supposed to sound anything like an all tube 200 watt monster like the one you played. I would never say the GK sound is bad, but i can fully understand you being blown away by the difference. That being said, it is also true that the orange you played is also a much more expensive head anyway....

just out of dumb curiousity...i know it wouldnt look right without the cab...but does anybody own just the head without the orange cab? also, what other all tube heads may sound better then my sterile GK? Im not looking to spend a billion dollars, beings im poor...haha.

And also again...how many models do they have? their website has 2 cabs and a head and thats it...

Sterile GK? lol if you don't want it give it to me! I am trying to save up to buy one! Where does this "sterile" reputation come from? I always find Gk sounds very full, punchy, and powerful.

Nah I've never heard one of those heads with a different cab. I would bet they still sound amazing. I also have an avatar cab, and I don't think the Orange one would have a drastic advantage over avatar, if any advantage at all.

The SS enthusiast's "full, punchy, and powerful" is the tube enthusiast's "sterile" ;). Just different strokes for different folks. I like both though!

i have an orange cab (4x10)
it was the best sounding cab out of all the cabs i tried with my head (aguilar db 359, 200 watts all tube, so similar to the orange you used)

i tried ampeg, trace elliot, eden and the orange one by one
and every single time i went straight back to the orange

so for me, the cab did make quite a bit of difference
it added even more mid punch and growl to my already growly head

so i cant begin to imagine the difference it would make with an orange head
the mids and tightness of the speakers in the cab are amazing and give your sound such punch

i know this probably wont help on the money side, but if you can do it, you wont be disapointed.

try and possibly find it used somewhere
i got lucky and was able to buy the floor model for quite a lot less than the regular price, slightly "used" but only on the aesthetic side.

Now I know where you're coming from, I'd say every full tube will sound better than your GK.

I made a list of amps, all full tube. The V4 or V4b's are reasonably priced in the US I guess (well... everything that says Ampeg is just CHEAP compared to the prices in Europe).

You may want to try running a tube preamp with your GK. It may not be a full tube setup, but it's a cheaper alternative to experiment with.

Maybe take your bass into a stor and ask to try a few of the tube pres they have with your GK in the store and see what happens.
