Please make me a beginner doom/stoner, etc… workout playlist

Boris is awesome and everything they do is gold, but doom is just a slice of their repertoire. They work with Merzbow frequently, they play hardcore, dabble in shoegaze, and their latest album is ambient.

EDIT: and this is a wild hybrid of stoner rock and Visual Kei:

Oh, I know, their multifaceted output is what sets them apart. They got my attention a long time ago with that Nick Drake album cover spoof. I’ve seen them three times, once in the desert, where they attempted a daytime lightshow….

Another band in that realm, while not necessarily on point with with the thread topic but related, is Acid Mothers Temple, a sort of a modern Japanese Hawkwind. Not everything they’ve put out is great, but when they’re on, they get out there.

OK, so far I’m digging Dozer/Greenleaf, All Them Witches, Fu Manchu, Truckfighters… Kyuss is kind of a given.

So, yeah. Definitely more desert than doom. Looking back, I’m kinda bummed I missed the early desert scene. I moved out of SoCAL right at the time it was kicking off, went to college at a conservative religious school, and just wasn’t into anything that wasn’t post punk, classic rock, or some grungy mix of both. The radio actually had so much good stuff in the early 90s, I was too well pre-occupied to notice anything else going on at the time. I mean, was any desert rock/metal showing up at the first Lollapaloozas? It was probably considered too metal at the time. Well, I had roommates that considered Soundgarden fans “hessians”, so that’s kinda the environment I was in at the time.

Kyuss was the big bang band for that desert scene, so many other outfits evolved out of it, and inspired others. You should check out one of their mentors, Chris Goss, and his band, Masters Of Reality(as if that name wouldn’t tip you off)…

Also, apparently I really like Swedish doom/stoner? Most of these are Swedish... Not that I DON'T like many of the other bands, but these haven't been mentioned yet! The Sword was the first one to come to mind given the criteria.

The recipe for Doom metal is conceptually along the lines of...

Take the first 4 (maybe 5) Sabbath albums,
play them at 1/4 speed,
add mountainous amounts of Big Muff style fuzz to generate square wavs with ultra low fundamentals,
play between the root/tritone and root/flatted 9th a lot,
add bad face makeup, leather, pentagrams and studded guitar straps...

As a 57 year old who got introduced to Stoner/Sludge/Desert by kids working in the marketing dept. of the day gig, I sort of fell into it the same way I guess, and took a very wide range of music as loosely falling under that umbrella. Not yet named i think, the following suggestions:

• The HOF album for me is De Vermis Mysteriis. That is bone rattling rock at its best, to me.
• while not 'stoner' offcially, they certainly are as desert as is possible to be, and musically quite clever, (really their own thing) - Yawning Man (try Vista Point)
• Do rummage around Boris - so much to enjoy beyond Pink.
• Greenleaf are Swedish and sort of pop-hook-ish stoner. Trails & Passes is a great album.
• I hear echos of stoner in the excellent surf rock of Daikaiju, Phase 2 is great record
• Sort of more Doom but I like them for the slow grooves, Restarter by Torche
• In the Southern Sludge Corner, The Red Album by Baroness is wonderful; Harvey Milk is great band, The Pleaser a fun record.

Om's drummer is also the drummer for Grails. While Grails falls outside the doom genre, they have a similar vibe to Om, and I would highly recommend them:

I put Boris on earlier this evening and my wife and I were blown away. Anything spouse approved is icing on the cake. Good stuff. I had never heard of them before this thread. And they’ve been around ~30 years. Geez, my head has been in the sand.

The first The Sword record is outstanding.


Hank III’s Attention Deficit Domination (as in Hank Williams 3, grandson of Hank Williams) is incredible. He has Sleep’s famous green Matamps. He’s got the doom thing down, his vocals on this record sound like Hank Williams Sr is Satan trying to sing like Layne Staley.
