I don’t hate them, but they can be inconvenient. If you get a twist on your instrument cable, for instance, a straight plug can be easily rotated in the socket to untwist it, without unplugging. You can’t do that with an angled plug. They also require more room plug in than a straight plug.

Top loaders bother because if I step on the lead (which I will) I can damage the jack as many vintage Gibson 355s will show. Worst that can happen if it's in the bottom is it will just slip out. Then you just shove it back in(wondering if this thread will get closed down)....

I prefer a top mount with a right angled cable, but it's not a super high priority, so only 1 of my 6 basses is built this way.

I don't mind either way when you're playing standing up, but when practicing sitting down, with a bottom plug, you need a right angle plug so the plug doesn't hit whatever you're sitting on.

I voted for the jack on top, near the vol/tone controls.

And I like a right angle plug on it too.

Use a 90 degree cable and run it back through your strap. Problem solved.

I literally just started doing this last weekend. Don't know why I did not try it before because it makes a heckuva lot of sense.

Certainly possible since these are a thing. You'd need to drape an antennae wire out somewhere if you're installing it in a shielded cavity (likely) but so what. Or build the wire into a narrow flat channel on the outer edge. Totally do-able.

According to my wife, the best place to put the plug is my mouth...

Seriously, my last two Basses, a Ric 4001 and a PB it’s on the bottom edge. Considering I never replaced either of those with a top feeder, it appears to be my preference. As it stands, the only 45 degree plugs I own are used for my rack.

I build my own basses, so for me it's a deliberate choice - always the side. Straight plug, cable run back through the strap - my IEM cable is part of the guitar cable assembly, so for me it's two things I have to have located in the right spot.

JB Player did it back in the 80s. The idea never caught on for some reason.

They’re cool for pedals(obviously).
I’ve never owned a piece of equipment(bass, amp, mixer, etc) that ‘required’ a right angle plug. I have owned equipment that made it next to impossible to use a right angle plug. I probably still have stigma re their reliability as well...seems like there used to be a weak point in them. They’re probably just fine now...but I’m old and ‘get off my lawn’.

Don't matter to me. Top or bottom is fine. I prefer right angle plug. I don't care much for the Ibanez design.
