I tried a few different colors but for some reason I really like the basic simplicity of a black pg:

If you get clear, you can paint the underside any color you want for a cool effect.
I had a 51 reissue w/ a clear guard one time. I went to the craft shop and bought all sorts of patterned art paper, cut it to match the clear pickguard and viola - interchangeable/variable pickguard patterns. I wish I had pics, it's long gone now...I had some truly tasteless attempts.
