As I don't know much about the EU market and pricing, a used one might be the solution if the budget is that small.. (budget was not discussed in the poll, or I might have refrained from answering).

The first post says "please suggest basses that don't exceed 750€". Assuming he could get any bass there you could get here, *new, for $838.28, what would you suggest? This is of course a rhetorical question, but I find it downright ridiculous to suggest $838.28 is a "small budget" and perhaps even more ridiculous that a bass that isn't US-made isn't worth buying. Just my opinion of course.

i like the blacktop jazz. played one for a while in a guitar center and it put out a lot of sound. would be great distorted or with fuzz with the two p pups. liked it so much that i'm in the process of building a similar bass now

Look for a used Stingray, it may fit your budget and be what you're looking for. Why limit yourself to the "new" market?

Big fan of g&l, the combination of mfd pick ups and some overdrive/distortion pedals should work out quite well!

Not sure of how much they are sold for or the availability of them, but there are some real nice Korean Spectors out there. If not those then, the Ibanez SRX series are sweet. They're active, 24 fret, 4 and 5 string, and nice growly MM pickups. There are versions that are neck thru also. I've played a couple and loved them, just never had a chance to buy the one I want.

SRX def has a growl...i play my ibby into Ampeg,,growl and it cuts in a mix

In my experience P basses have usually a bit of a midrangey sound, which tends to work well with OD, as you all know. Besides, the blacktop series is mostly geared toward the higher output rock and roll sound anyway.

The BTJ is monsterous with the stock pups. It's not quite at "sledgehammer of god" levels of crunch, but it's certainly got to be as good as god's tackhammer, almost as thunderous as my Mockingbird.

It's 99% P with just the neck, and so much more when you bring in the bridge or roll off the neck.

Fender Standard Jaguar...pickup combination and electronics give you a very versatile bass.
And it just looks killer!

It's like bringing 3-4 basses to the gig, even without using the active tone boost.
