Poor Kitty

Tell that to the cat.. Let's get the cats side of the story. I guess the cat read the script and he's going for the best distressed animal in a scene award.

^ what he said.

Look there is a world of difference between "play acting" with a human being that understands what is going on and a kitten. Animals do not have the capacity for abstract thought as we do, generally speaking (they do show flashes of it though), and that kitten had no way of knowing it was "pretend". That kitten took the entire experience as being as real as the douchebag kid that was "acting" wanted it to appear.

As someone keeps saying "it's all about perception". Yup, and that kitten PERCIEVED that as a real experience.

The little douchebag that did this needs to have a crap life, and preferably a short one that doesn't intersect mine or that of anyone I care about (including ANY animal).

Remember, a human being could refuse to participate, or defend him/herself if being forced/coerced into participation, or hopefully do something to bring the bad person in the situation to some form of justice. The kitten has NONE of those options, it's stuck in the situation with no method of extracting itself, or exacting retribution/justice.

This kid doesn't have issues, he has subscriptions. I hope they end up delivered to a prison address, where he is busy being some guys "bitch".

Whats worse is, the cat was being kept inside the shower cuble. He'd obviously planned this attack, otherwise they wouldn't have bunged the cat in there and closed the door.

Again, to those who are saying that it's all just meant to annoy the cat, it looked more distressed than annoyed. He wasn't hitting it hard enough to kill it but he was definitely hitting it hard enough to hurt. And then soaking it with water in the end to leave a lasting effect?

It reminds me of when sexual psychopaths reach orgasm during their attacking frenzy, they will often scar or damage their victim to leave some lasting damage because after their "peak" they lose the ability to connect the damage they are causing with their own pleasure.

It's quite clear watching the video that this kid is experiencing the same kind of pleasureable frenzy from hurting the cat. Sick. :scowl:

OK.

I watched the video -- unlike most people.

This is what I saw:

Some dumb-ass kid and his friend pretending to torture a cat (complete with fake NAZI accent) by using the cat as a video prop and swinging it aroung and shoving it up against a shower stall and slapping it back and forth. Then they sprayed it with water from the shower.

The cat was not hurt because the kid was not trying to hurt the cat.

This bears repeating.

The cat was not hurt because the kid was not trying to hurt the cat.

The kid was acting for the video and was only pretending to hurt the cat. He was only very lightly hitting the cat. As in, pulling his punches like a kung fu movie. The kids were making a stupid video and they didn't care that they annoyed the hell out of the cat by tossing it around and spraying it with water and they are truly jerks because of it.

But they did not hurt the cat. They had no intention of hurting the cat.

For all those who are screaming for these little jerkwads to be tortured to death without even looking at the video for yourselves to see what actually happened, you should be ashamed of yourselves. These kids deserve to be punished for their desire to annoy the crap out of a cat for their own amusement and they should also be psychologically evaluated for their eagerness to film such a spectacle but they don't deserve the barbaric, knee jerk response they've been treated to by the mob.

Have some sense of PROPORTION, people.

Flame away.

I was afraid to say that because I knew everyone would make me look like the bad guy. But, that is what it looked like to me. I saw nothing permanently damaging to the cat. They were just mentally aggravating it more so than physically torturing it.

So, for the purposes of a thought exercise:

1. Who deserves a greater punishment; this boy for doing exactly what he did in the video (assuming you've watched it) or someone who administers water boarding to another human?

2. Given the punishment most people seem to want on this kid (ie a beating / torture), what would make you any better than the kid in administering it to a minor?

The argument for that would be that he has done something to deserve being punished for, whereas the cat was just an innocent victim. Punishment is not a bad thing, as long as it is dealt out for things that are just and right.

1. These events really aren't related. The kid was doing this for the purpose of being a turd and/or attention. While water boarding may seem cruel to us, none of us have been on the wrong end of an IED, mortar shell, RPG, and/or AK-47. I'm no solidier, but I feel somewhat troubled that the televised beheading gets less attention than water boarding. At least the captured enemy combatant is allowed to keep their life and not suffer a sword slowly hacking through their neck.

2. I don't really think a beat down is the answer, but the kid definitely needs to be put in his place to avoid further escallation of his fancy to torture defenseless animals, which is something that eventually ends up bad for society.

Not pointing the finger at you directly but it's people who show this kind of "yeah, so an animal got abused, ok", shirking attitude that lets people get away with this kind of thing.

Anyone who has read my posts so far should be able to clearly see that I think that it's not okay and I stated that I think the kids should be punished.

I think that beating the kids to a pulp and torturing them to death so that they can start serving an eternity of torture in hell is way over the top. How is it that my saying so can be construed as "yeah, so an animal got abused, ok"? I expected to be flamed but I didn't expect to be accused of condoning animal abuse. :eyebrow:

Perhaps people can get their emotions under control for a moment and consider a rational, and not emotion based, punishment that is proportional to the crime.

I think the justice system should charge the kids with animal cruelty as a misdemeanor and I think they should be sentenced to some weekends of community service. Let them pick up trash by the side of the road and shovel snow at the homeless shelter for three months worth of Saturdays and Sundays.

If I were the father of these boys (although I know for a fact that my child wouldn't even consider acting like this, my daughter loves animals and she loves our cat) I would ground them from their friends for, at the very least, a few months. They would lose ALL access to the internet, indefinitely. Their computer and all their games would be taken away, along with cell phone, ipod, television and any other gizmos and gadgets they used to enjoy and I would put them to work around the house with as many chores as I could think of. I would then get some books from the library to read in whatever spare time they had left in the day that might teach them the value of compassion and respect for living things.

Is there anyone who genuinely thinks that this type of punishment doesn't go far enough and it would be more rational to condemn these kids as worthless human beings, beat them up and then lock them in prison for the rest of their lives?

You're avoiding the question. Water boarding was used well before the current "scandal". I was merely picking an example of human-human "abuse" where there is a debate as to whether it qualifies as "torture" or not. Its not specifically related to any factual scenario. Imagine water boarding administered for the same reason as this kid is abusing this cat - ie the purpose of making a video. Who deserves the greater punishment?

Hbarcat,

You speak of "proportion" but you have obviously not given serious thought to this:

If the kid was hitting his brother with the same amount of force, it wouldn't injure him, but it would probably hurt.

Now, hitting an animal AT LEAST 10 times smaller than him with that amount of force WILL hurt it. I can't understand what gives you the piece of mind to state that the cat "clearly wasn't hurt".

I work in veterinary medicine, and have two cats. I can't tell you how many times I've seen small dogs and cats that were injured with broken bones, sprains, etc. from little kids "playing" with them.
You must realize the proportion of the size difference between this kid and this cat. An adult cat typically weighs around 10 lbs. This kid is most likely over 100 lbs.

Cats also are notorious for being able hide their pain.
This cat was definitely more than "annoyed". Not only was it fearing for its life, I would bet my life savings that the beatings were, in fact, inflicting pain.

I know a woman who recently had her cat euthanized, because someone in her household kicked it in the face. The cat could NOT be saved from a kick in the face. Imagine that huh?

I'm not saying the kid deserves to be killed like others have threatened, but he does deserve some punishment handed down from local prosecutors in addition to many years of therapy. I watched the video and became sick to my stomach and right now I am shaking while typing this.

I don't think I need to mention that homicidal psychopaths start by abusing animals, but these videos were obviously a eye-opener for everyone to see that this kid has some serious problems. (Not to mention his love for the rebel flag).

I did give thought to it and I spelled out exactly what I thought was reasonable (and proportional) punishment. What is your opinion on my suggested punishment?

The kid is typical of millions of kids who haven't been taught any meaningful values by their parents and who are allowed to develop their own values by absorbing whatever crap they see on TV and on the internet. He obviously lacks compassion and due respect for other people or for nature but I'd be more inclined to attribute that to the movie "Jackass" than to the Rebel flag.

You mentioned he needs counseling. What he really needs is to have his priorities changed by those who are in charge of him (his parents) so that he spends more time engaging in positive and healthy activities that benefit others and spends less time with the electronic babysitters. If either one of these two kids spends even an hour a month on anything that would generally be considered useful to the community, I'll eat my Ibanez.

Hooray for a professional turning up and making clear that yes, when the kid was hitting the cat, he was indeed hurting it!

EDIT: I didn't realize you were an animal expert. Forget everything I posted so far.

Ok, kids a douchebag. Cat is fine now. There is no way this will go easy for him now as the jury pool is unbelievably tainted now, so whats the problem?

It really ticks me off to see youtube and some idiots blog as judge jury and executioner. And this has happened a number of times over other things. I don't have all that much sympathy for the kid, or the Marine throwing the puppy off the cliff but there is always more to the story and that is exactly the principle upon which our justice system was founded. There are a ton of things much more deserving of your outrage than this.

And the Rebel flag comment was out of line. Sorry, but you make a lot of inferences with that statement and they can not all be born out. The kid was supposedly a racist, this is true, but a sweeping generality about the Stars and Bars is rather intolerant. Of course, tolerance means tolerating only PC ideas nowadays doesn't it?

there is always more to the story

Try and tell me one legitimate reason as to why a kid living a comfortable surburban life should be allowed to abuse an animal like that? What more could there be to this story? We saw someone who was clearly acting with intent abusing an animal. What more do you want, a statement from the cat saying it crapped on the carpet and deserved a beating?
