Pork Loin mod

The WH PL I ordered and received from Musicians Friend in December was the original version. I guess it depends on where you order it and if there's a way to guarantee you're getting new stock.
Have people actually had versions with a different cap then? Ive read a lot of speculations, but haven’t seen anything actualy confirmed. Mine was the last in stock so I’m guessing its going to be old new stock.

I’ve been hearing that the new PLs are shipping with the mod already done... you may not have to do any soldering. Maybe someone else can confirm.

If you do have to solder, just clipping won’t work, cuz the wires on the cap actually go into little holes on the board, so you have to clear out the old before you can put in the new.

Low heat so you don’t damage the board.

Thanks, from what ive read they arent shippping with the mod, but propel seem to be assuming they are. Ill open mine up at the weekend and let you know.

My thinking was to solder the new cap on to the surface of the board, so effectively soldered to the old stems. Maybe its not such a good idea then.

Cheers.

I haven't heard of one person reporting that they bought a brand new one that had the mod done at the factory as of yet however I remember JohnK or someone saying they were told by WH that they would be starting to do this in new runs. Maybe they simply haven't done a new run yet......

EDIT: I imagine given the popularity of this pedal that there are a ton out there. Brand new even. I am curious how often they do do new runs of the PL though. That's an interesting question...

Me? I'm no master builder. Not in the slightest. I can however do pup swaps and some other smaller jobs like yourself @dave_bass5. If you are comfortable doing these things, I would just remove the original and put the new one in new leads and all. It doesn't make sense to me to add to old leads as they are for one, old, and two you'd be adding more of something you don't need to the circuit. That's just what this noob is thinking anyway. Maybe I'm wrong.

But me, I removed the old cap and installed the new one in full in about 15, 20 min. And I took my time. I didn't even remove the board from the enclosure. It was very easy. Again, if you are confident in pup swapping and such this should be a total breeze for you.

yeah, I’ll give it a go and do it properly. It’s not so much that I’m worried, more impatient and tend to rush things.

Going off at a slight tangent, do we know if this mod needs to be done in ther new Pork and Pickle? I was tempted to wait for one of these but I really dont need fuzz. Saying there hat if I like the PL as much as I hope, I might pick up a PnP later in the year, as long as there is no downside to it compared to the PL. I guess I could make use of the fuzz at some point. I haven’t had time to go through the PnP thread all the way through yet.

Just carefully unhinge that big uggly battery compartment and access the pcb underside from there.
If you clip the cap it would be even easier, you can then pull each leg separately while heating it up.

While the hole is hot, use a wooden toothpick to make way for new legs. The solder wont stick to wood.

Just wanted to report back that my PL also has the old cap in it, so it seems like the rumours were just fantasy.

I had a great rehearsal with the PL, I was surprised that I kept it on almost all night. It does an amazing job of warming the BDDI up when I need it, but I found I didn’t like my tone as much when I turned it off. Now I’m going to have to get a P&P as soon as I can.
I played with the trim pots today but actually preferred them at the factory settings.

Guys, can I ask if this cap is ok.

And can someone tell me how to get the board out. I took the battery holder out to have a look at the clearance but I think the working space is a bit tight for me.

that cap is fine. i wouldn't even remove the board.
just snip the old cap out but leave enough of it's original leads to solder the new cap to them.

Yeah I did it while it was still in the box. Easy peezy

Thanks for the replies. Ill leave it in then.
John, that method was my first choice, thanks for confirming its ok to do that. Ive never de soldered anything on a PCB before so this way seems like the easiest option.

Shows how much I know ;)

I’m sure either works. If I wasn’t so impatient I would do it properly, make it look like it was done at manufacturing, but as long as it works I don’t care what’s it looks like. Not having to de solder anything means I’m less likely to use too much heat on the PCB and possibly damaging something.
I will add that I’ve been playing with the PL a lot this weekend and don’t have an issue with the stock tone. I’m assuming I can dial some of the new brightness out if I don’t like/need it?
