Step aside Trekkie mortals. I am about to outnerd you completely.

Random fact: In the book Lord of the Flies, the boys use Piggie's glasses to start a fire. This is impossible. William Golding hints at Piggie being myopic in the book. Therefore his glasses would have contained diverging lenses which don't focus light. Piggie would have had to been farsighted for this to work.

I'm going to go try to cover up my nerd scent with RGX body spray. A pretty lady on TV told me to.

You are so correct, oh wise one! Thanks! Made me do some research. That being said;


Hurricanes curve to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. What makes the hurricanes move in this way is the Coriolis force. ;)

What's funny is that tourists (including a former colleague of mine) in Ecuador are often suckered in by clever demonstrations of the water draining both ways just a couple feet on either side of the equator. The trick is to walk across the equator and then turn to face the audience, rotating the basin and setting up currents. You can make the water drain either way based on which way you turn. If you're really clever, you get a basin with symmetric sides so you can even make the water drain straight down ON the equator.

It's a neat little sham. Not as neat as the illusions of the Mystery Spot here in Santa Cruz, CA, but a neat trick nonetheless.
