I don't know about anybody else, but this thread is definitely helping me firm up my "TBers I would like to meet" list.

What if one theoretical poster had 10,000 posts that were all Fieldy-pwns-related and the other had 9,900 Asian Chick posts and 100 posts providing the knowledge they had about technique or the finer nuances between the available aftermarket Musicman-style humbuckers? The newbie might think that theoretical member number 1 was well read, but he'd be wrong. In actuality he's only "well-posted".So what is a newbie to do if they want to check into who is giving them advice? Looking at the post count of any member can at least tell them who has been active in the topical music forums, and to what degree they've been active. This isn't much, but it's at least something. If someone with 10,000 posts on a music forum gives you what seems to be good advice, you might be inclined to take their steady activity on the forum to possibly be a sign that they're at least well-read on the subject. Would you think any differently if you discovered that 9,900 of those posts weren't about music related issues at all, but were instead about things ranging from "Asian chicks rule" to "The return of the son of man laws, part 17", to "who thinks farting on an elevator is funny?"? I know that I'd rather, if i were going to be looking at post counts at all, be looking at a count of music related posts.
And boy, I wonder how many man laws Maki has broken in this thread- talk about needing to call the waaahmbulance![]()

I was using Fitzgerald's "what if". If a newbie makes an assumption of knowledge by sheer post count in music-related threads, well, that's just dumb.Your "what ifs" don't line up with reality though. The "Fieldy pwns" posters either stay in the low numbers or end up getting banned for trolling.
There seems to be an implicit assumption that a post in a non-OT forum intrinsically has some value worth reporting / recording in the post count. Clearly the "bassists with beards club" shows that this assumption is incorrect!I was using Fitzgerald's "what if". If a newbie makes an assumption of knowledge by sheer post count in music-related threads, well, that's just dumb.

The difference is that while posts that contain nothing more than +1 don't add anything to the musical discussions on this site, there are countless thousands of posts that happen every day and finding all of those would be difficult. Every Off Topic post, by its very nature, is not music related at all.

^ has a whole board of pedals to play his fuzzed out, heavily chorused and flanged, triple octave version of "Louie Louie".
^ was so close but didn't know I don't own one chorus pedal.....

Stereotype thread post sheds light on TB user and musical approach.
That's akin to the slight off topic tangents you find in the music-based threads. Technically neither belong there. Just because you find a piece of a strawberry in a pile of poo doesn't mean you should bust out the whipped cream![]()
Most of the musical knowledge shared is actually in PM's between members of the stereotype crew
