Post Count?

Well,Rene you were the one who was surprised I wasn't in your age range.................... Feel rejected? ;)

No thank you.
Flirting with a man that is as old as my dad is as good as I got it.

There badly needs to be a TalkBass Love Connection thread, as proven by both this, and the "% TBers you want to meet" thread, it could go in the bassists section! :D

Bassist seeks bassist.

You know, that can become slang for echelons that have nothing remotely to do with anything bass or musical.

Hard to believe some of the drama here about post counts. In the spirit of transparency, I'll disclose my reasoning for going along with the suggestion to exclude OT and Lobby posts from post counts:

Post counts have no real function other than to show how active a member is. They don't tell you anything about how reliable a member's information is, how good a player they are, what their teaching/building/luthier credentials are, etc. Some vbulletin sites have activated a feature called "Rep Points", which was designed to allow members to give feedback on the information given by other members; the idea was that if somebody made a useful or helpful post, they could get positive feedback on that post, and over time, this would be reflected in their "Rep Points". In actual use, features like this usually become a popularity contest dominated by those who spend the most time hanging out and shooting the breeze online and have nothing to do with the content/value of posts whatsoever (to see how the concept of "Rep Points" can turn into a total wankfest parody of itself, visit a certain forum dedicated to home recording that shall remain technically nameless here).

So what is a newbie to do if they want to check into who is giving them advice? Looking at the post count of any member can at least tell them who has been active in the topical music forums, and to what degree they've been active. This isn't much, but it's at least something. If someone with 10,000 posts on a music forum gives you what seems to be good advice, you might be inclined to take their steady activity on the forum to possibly be a sign that they're at least well-read on the subject.

I think this is a very well-reasoned point and I agree very much with this - I would add that by looking at postcounts you can also see how loyal people have been to the forum.

So a person who has hung around here for a long time and posted regularly, has something "invested" in the site - they want it to be a good experience for all - they want it to keep going!

If you just use join dates, from a newbie's POV - then you could be talking to somebody who looked in once 5 years ago and never bothered until now, as they had no interest...? :hmm:

Whereas if you come along and see there are lots of people who have been here a while and are posting regularly - then you feel the site has some "solidity" and worth - if all these people stick around here and contribute on a regular basis..:)

It makes you feel like the site has Ed Fuqua's favourite quality : "Substance"!! ;)

Bruce I tend to agree with you about the validity of post counts and what they indicate, but if we have the current set up where people's posts don't count if they originated in OT, then I'd rather see them disappear completely. Chris, also implies in his post that not all posts are quality, and some are just plain worthless. For instance, this post, and yours would not count toward your total, but a +1 in a strings thread would. So are you for keeping the policy as is (where this post and yours does not add to your count), or are you for returning to the policy we had before where every post counts? Based on this post, I gathered you are NOT for eliminating post count, but I want to see what your opinion is on this, since you do have the "honor" of having the highest post count on this site.

good point. as well, who would decide what post is good and worthless. it's highly subjective. :)

Carlos, they've already decided that this is determined by its geography. If the post and thread came from Off Topic, it's deemed worthless or rather of less value than a post that would add to your post count because it came from one of the other forums. This is my gripe. It seems to be a mean spirited jab at the regulars who post in OT, and it creates a subtle social heirarchy that implies that a person who has most of their posts in OT does not hold an opinion as valid as someone who has most of their posts in the other forums. By this logic a poster that has 1000 +1 posts in the basses section, would essentially outranks a person that has had 1000 thoughtful and meaningful posts in OT (this by no stretch of the imagination is even close to you or me ;)). So Chris's hypothetical newbie, by this logic would then be inclined to value the opinion of the +1 guy because his posts count and the off topic posters posts don't.

Chris, then turned around and said that post count doesn't really matter anyway. Well, if this is the case, then why the distinction? If it doesn't really matter, then why not either leave it the way it was, or eliminate them all together.

I provided you the recap because I know that in your comfortable little snuggie world you might not have seen the little nuances because snuggie vision tends to block out the nasty stuff. ;)

^Chris, I didn't quote you directly, but you're free to dispute anything I said on your behalf. I meant no ill will by it. I was just posting my understanding of what you said.

I think we need to form a blue ribbon steering comittee to evaluate the qualitative aspects of OT posts. We could commission a development effort to create an app that could parse each post and either add or subtract post count values based on agreed upon keywords.

You forgot the word "metric" and the phrase "at the end of the day"

You guys are going a bit crazy with this +1 business. You guys might not leave Off Topic enough to notice (nyuck nyuck nyuck), but it's frowned upon when someone posts just those kinds of posts. Off Topic posts are simply not music-related, and this is a music site. As a music site, I'm not sure how anyone would argue that posts having nothing to do with music add value to the site as a whole. They may add to your feeling of community, but as far as adding to musical value? No. And really, who's being treated unfairly? This rule applies to everyone on TB. If you spend most of your time in Off Topic, then that's your choice- you're more than welcome to spend in the other forums.

If, when you joined TB, there was a note in the disclaimer stating that since this is a music forum, any posts made in the Off Topic section would not count towards your post count total, would you seriously have considered not joining?

This seems to be an issue of people who spend most or all of their time in Off Topic being upset that are being considered less than an equal part of the TalkBass community. If you are one of those folks though and want to be considered an equal part of TalkBass, then you should probably reconsider why you're spending so much time in the Off Topic section.

So the sense of community fostered by this online, uh, community has no value to the site as a whole? I still say this is a matter of perception. Your contention is that it is a music site. I say it is a musicians site.

I think a few people have already stated that would affect their supporting status.

In all fairness, I think the "why" and "why not" that have been covered by a number of people here.
