Post Count?

I'm not sure where this came from.

Mike

It was a response to "I don't see how OT could be called the "non-musician" side when it is populated by musicians." Since those musicians aren't supposed to be talking about music here, their being musicians is unrelated to the forum.

OK. Got your point (except I still disagree with it). I look at this website differently. I look at it like a room that Paul rented out for bassists to hang out and talk. To me, that makes their being musicians directly related to the forum. I see where you're coming from, I just don't view this site in the same light.

If I were a person that held your position, then I'd be pushing to get OT eliminated altogether.

Mike

It seems to be a mean spirited jab at the regulars who post in OT, and it creates a subtle social heirarchy that implies that a person who has most of their posts in OT does not hold an opinion as valid as someone who has most of their posts in the other forums.

I'm giving site admin the benefit of the doubt on this. I don't think it is their intention to be mean. While I remember reading that; in the past some favored removing OT all together, I don't think site admin has anything personal against posters who frequent OT.

I do think site admin wants to make a statement and it is something to the effect of "think before you post"; something they've always tried to hammer home. I'd venture that in OT we still need to think before we post; (especially if you are considering asking if your tattoo of your band name is stupid) just a little less so than in other subforums. I will agree with you Maki that the delivery is fatally flawed but again, I don't think there is any malicious intent.

As I said though, without an OT, all of the music threads would start filling up with off topic tangentals. It would be hell for us mods to edit everything out, and it would be difficult to get to the information you want.

I don't believe that would be the case any moreso than it is right now. At worst, the hell of editing would just move forums and the message would be consistent.

I'm not necessarily in favor of that, but if the example is going to be drawn out....

Mike

Because you can't talk about music in here? If you have something that actually relates to the discussion of your fellow musicians and how they think, how they approach music, etc., then it really belongs in the other forums- not OT. You're actually proving my point though- you're saying that you don't want to clutter the other forums up with garbage that wouldn't add to the threads. What's the point of getting the sense of community if it doesn't lead you to actively engage in the community where it counts- the music forums? What use is it to get to know people better to better the conversation if you never enter the conversation? It's like having that great conversation before class, and then when it's time for class to begin- you don't even go into the classroom. If there's something worth talking about that will add to the musical discussions, then put them in the music forums where they belong.

What about music related posts to a thread that is off topic?

Like say, for example: 'Hey guys, I'm really having a problem in my relationship, yadda yadda yadda..."

And someone's response to that happens to relate to a situation within their band, or pertains to their musical skills?

We realize that this is a forum for musicians, not just musicians, but Bassists. I'm sure the majority of us in OT do play bass. If one would really look through the OT posts I'm sure some music related advice can be found. Sure, maybe not as much as in, say, the Basses forum, or the Strings forum. But generally, anyone seeking advice in OT is seeking advice from the bass community, not just any random webbies.

but the fact remains that people are interacting with people within these threads and posts. So the post distinction is easily transferred as a policy against a specific population of TB'rs - those that primarily hang out in OT.

I would go so far as to say that we are bassists interacting with bassists* and I thought that was the intention of Talkbass.com, at least thats why I come here.

*for the majority

I've seen it at several other forums online. It can get far, far worse. Right now, we keep the music forums mostly on topic. Off Topic is our second biggest forum- imagine all those posts slowly sliding into the music threads....no fun.

It's really simple to me- the topic of this forum is bass and music, gear, and musicians related to it. This forum is for things that aren't on topic. This forum is for things completely unrelated to the topic of the forum.

I'd say the fact that the majority of us here, I'd estimate probably 90-95% of us, are bassists renders the entire forum of Off Topic actually on topic. At least in regards to the entirety of the forum...

That's akin to a question in the music forums being answered by a non-music-related answer. It happens on occasion, but it by far not the norm. A lot of the music-related stuff you find in OT if you search simply doesn't even belong here.

I agree with you in that I dont think the intent was malicious, but when you stir the pot, some things may rise to the surface.

I'm with Maki, in that I believe there is a sense of 'All men are created equal, just some more equal than others' going on here.

The fact that most of us are bassists does not make posts having nothing to do with music become on topic with music. The forum is about the side of our lives that has to do with music and bass. Off Topic is about the side of our lives that doesn't. I'm sure 90-95% of us like cheese. That doesn't mean posting about cheese in the Basses forum will be on topic just because it's something we share in common.

The rule is being spread equally to all men (and women) on the forum though. If a post is considered less than equal and the posts have an issue with it, let them speak up about it for themselves :D

My point exactly. And it is by far the norm. I don't know how much moderation you do in all the forums, but aside from OT I frequent the Band Management and the Bass Humor & Gig Stories forums quite often, and generally find a lot of non-music related posts.

No, the topic of cheese may not be music related, thats why we have the OT section, so we can find out what percentage of bassists like cheese. Which, to me, is still relevant. ;)

All of the music threads are currently filled with off-topic tangentals. Why don't you edit those?

In Effects, they have. Sure I was PISSED when grygrx started doing so, but honestly, I like the effects forum better now. I never thought I'd say it, but grygrx has actually done a GREAT job.

I honestly WOULD NOT want to be a mod here. It must be like a second 40 hour a day job. Plus whatever they do for 8 hours to makez some $$$

EDIT: I also don't give 2 giant stinky ****z about post counts. Sure, mine is only 8748 (including this one), but I'd like to think I've had some lasting effects (pun intended) on the people here. Sorta like how you peeps have effected me somewhat.

So then its safe to assume that OT, as a forum is a significant revenue stream for this site. So if we're creating a hierarchy of value or worth, then you would think that OT would be more appreciated, rather than deemed worthless (not worthy of ticking a precious point on a person's post count) when compared to the other forums with considerably less traffic.

People going on off-topic tangetals is a different thing- the point we were taking up was non-music related answers to musical questions that still remain on topic. And they are definitely not the norm. I only mod one forum, but I've been on TB for eight years.

The career/hobby doesn't even matter at that point if it's not part of the discussion. 50% of the OT posters could be professional balloon animal makers. If the topic of music doesn't come into it, then it doesn't matter if the posters are musicians or not. They are not related. They are off topic. Hence the name :)

That's based on the assumption that all of the OT posts would find their way into the other forums...not really logical.

No. The fact that amount of OT traffic may bring in more ad revenue does not bring more validity to the posts in the context of a musical forum. Just like donating for a supporting membership won't make your posts count for double.
