He is a brilliant singer/songwriter from Detroit, got his start as ‘John Lennon’ in a touring company version of Beatlemania, then scuffled a bit, getting his first recordings out at the tail end of the power pop trend. Signed by Warner Brothers, he became a fixture on the ‘Adult Contemporary’ charts in the 80’s, his songs being covered, as well as himself covering artists like John Hiatt and Richard Thompson. Former Joe Jackson bassist Graham Maby joined his band, and he portrayed Buddy Holly in the La Bomba movie, a no brainer as his material was compared to the 50’s rocker. He’s done archival work for Capitol Records, compiling a series of early ‘Hillbilly Boogie’/Honkytonk albums for them. Wrote the title track for the Johnny Cash spoof film, Walk Hard. Often performing solo at intimate shows, he’s also filled in on MC5 reunions and Wayne Kramer’s Jail Guitar Doors charity, and currently plays with The Smithereens, after the passing of Pat DiNizio.
