Post your favourite tanks

(OK, one hint...in Tadcaster)
Samuel Smith's.....drool

My father-in-law, RIP, fought his way into Berlin in a T-34. The block to block, floor to floor fighting left it's mark on him, although the Ghetto that he was freed from by the Red Army was no picnic either. He loved the Willys Jeep too.

Given air power and those nasty depleted uranium arms are tanks of any real use except that we make and sell a load of them? On infantry armor is killer but in the integrated battlefield of today I wouldn't want to be in one.

That is a great story about your father in law, thanks. Can't imagine what that must have been like.

I wouldn't want to be under fire in one either! But as i understand it, modern tanks are only vulnerable to comparable firepower- which doesn't often happen.

Although the beast that @Funky Ghost posted is no doubt a consideration...

Also the new Russian T-14 Armata. Pix to follow

Yeah, this one is a tough looking customer: the T-14 Armata

3 crew, all in the front of the hull - loading in the turret is automated, something the Russians pioneered (I think). Composite armour, I think 120mm gun... must've cost a bit!

Badass Israeli Centurion

M-10, upgunned 90mm tank destroyer on a Sherman chassis, the M36 Jackson is similar.

The Centurion got around for sure - one of Britain's big exports. The Israelis also used upgraded Ww2 era Sherman variants until quite recently. But their home grown tanks are nothing to sniff at...

M1A2 Abrams. Brit armour, American muscle. Only 1 instance of penetration, and the driver still made it home, despite losing a toe or 2. Good man.

The unfortunate truth about the Abrams is that power plant is extremely high maintenance. My father retired at Ft Bliss where the Abrams are stationed. He was an engineer and was involved in that program. My brother in law ( now ex ) worked on the sighting system for that platform as well at Ft Bliss. They are amazing machines, no doubt. But the fact remains the peers in the field have at least as good armor, at least as good targeting and in most cases, at the expense of flat out speed ( in a few cases ) more reliable power plants. I didn't want to be a homer and put the Paladin :) Although, it's considered a self propelled artillery we still felt like a tank with the biggest damn gun on the field.

I was close to offering this one up but too little is known, but much is speculated about it.

I know it has Europe quite nervous.

Nr.5 Invalid Link Removed (Russia)

The Armata is a new Russian main battle tank of new generation. It was first publicly revealed in 2015. A small batch of these tanks were built. Its full-scale production could begin in 2017-2018.

The Armata is a clean sheet design with a number of advanced features. It shares little common with the current Invalid Link Removed. The Armata is much bigger.

Its specifications are classified, however the Armata might be one of the most protected tanks in the world. It has newly-developed base armor, made of steel, ceramics and composite materials. Also Armata has a new add-on explosive reactive armor. It has been reported that Armata will be fitted with new active protection system. It also has a new countermeasures system that reduces the chance of being hit by enemy ATGW with semi-automatic guidance.

This tank is operated by a crew of 3 men. All crewmembers are seated side-by-side in a well protected armored cell, located at the front of the hull. It is the first production MBT with such a crew layout. The tank can operate even with penetrated armor, as long as the crew cell is intact.

The Armata is also a world's first production MBT with completely unmanned turret. It is armed with a new 125 mm smoothbore gun that is more accurate than the previous Russian tank guns. This tank can launch anti-tank guided missiles in the same manner as ordinary projectiles. The gun is completed with an autoloader. This tank has a hunter-killer capability.

It has been reported that this tank is fitted with a diesel engine, developing 1200 hp.

Introduction of this new Russian MBT created a stir in the West. Now a number of countries, such as Germany and UK are looking to upgrade their tanks, or develop new designs in order to counter the threat posed by this new Russian tank.
