hey higgie!

is that a maxon af9? how do you like it for bass? i'm considering one right now.... i'd like to hear your input (as well as anyone else's who's used one).

I keep trying filter pedals, and I keep going back to my UE303B, which contains the same circuit (more or less) as the Maxon AF9. It's prone to a bit of volume peaking, but that can be reined in with a compressor. IMO that bandpass option just puts it head and funky shoulders over any hp/lp filter.

that's what i like about my qtron+: the bandpass mode. actually, the mix mode, where your original signal is blended with the bandpass. sounds super-juicy!

what i don't like about my qtron+ is the size. it's too huge, dammit! oh, and it's broken right now.

i'm seriously considering getting rid of it in favor of a maxon af9. if anyone has any opinions on this matter, please let me know!

Wouldn't give it a second thought. People like the Q-Tron, and people like the DOD FX25. I had both. I sold both once I got the Maxon. It can pretty much do what they both do, all in one funky little 9v (unlike the Q-Tron), small (unlike the Q-Tron) true bypass box. Really warm filter sweep too. It really sounds nice with dirt pedals infront of it too...Got a real "Sir Psycho" thing going on with it.

It's definitely a keeper.

Don't have my camera at the moment but board is: TU-2, Choralflange, EP1, BJF Blueberry.

You can hear all my effect on my band's myspace songs. I use the Blueberry on Haunted, Model Me (especially clear in the solo), and the end of Dear Jane. The EP1 is used on the beginning and end of Dear Jane (the octave sound is from my RPM1). The Choralflange chorus is used on the slow parts of Model Me and the flange is used on the solo for Haunted.

I'll post a pic later.

I downsized quite a bit lately myself (which is funny because I've bought six pedals in the last month, but they're mostly not keepers). I think we all go in waves of interest in fx. I also think that we may be subtly influenced by each other's commentary in this forum, so that we may accumulate and slough off fx more or less at the same time as each other. Sort of like women living together, inevitably being "in sync" calendar-wise if ya know what I mean. ;)

At it's largest my board was 12+ pedals. The last pedal I got rid of was a Bass Octave Fuzz. I downsized from the huge board to make live switching less painless. Future changes will probably be losing the Choralflange and replacing it with smaller chorus pedal and the adding of a Depth Charge.

I think you might be confusing me with someone else.

You're probably hallucinating, but you might still be correct ;)

To me, having a huge variety of pedals on a gigantic board would be cool if...
A) I never had to move the thing.
2) I actually used all of them.

The reality is that, for the music I play (indie-rock), I'm playing clean 90% of the time with OD on a few songs, fuzz on a couple, and synth for just the opening to another. As much as I love the way my Discubmobulator (sold) and Boss BF-2 (never to be sold) sounded for messing around on my own, they just didn't get used in the band. Effects are tools, and if they don't get used, there's no sense to me in hauling them around all over town. I'm more interested in having a few perfect (for me) effects that serve a purpose rather than a whole lot of moderate ones that just take up space and look cool.

That's just my opinion, I'm usually wrong.

Subtly??!! Subtle like a bat to the side of my head. Do you have any idea how much lunch money I've blown because of you bastards (I mean that in the nicest way, of course)?

The list includes...Frantone Lo-Tone, ZVex Woolly Mammoth, Digitech BSW, Emma Disco-Bob, EH English Muff'n, ProCo Rat, Aphex Punch Factory. Dude, that's a lot of lunches! Some have moved on, some have become permanent fixtures.

For me, TB is a much better resource for getting real-life feedback on equipment than the reviews at HC. I've found that whatever the question, someone here has done it and can tell me all about it.

i have a buttload of pedals, but i'm trying to find one of each effect for my board (fuzz, delay, chorus, filter, flanger, phaser, pre-amp, octave....tuner, noise gate).... so it's in a constant state of flux. i guess i've downsized a bit since my last incarnation... but i'm just sifting through and finding my favorites out of all the effects i try. and trying to keep as many of them as small as possible so they'll all fit. the search never ends, but for now i've found my favorite of:
tuner (boss TU2)
octaver (eh POG)
fuzz (eh LBM)
phaser (boss PH1r)
flanger (boss BF2)
preamp (tech 21 PBDDI)
gate (mxr smart gate)
delay (locobox AD-01)

i had my qtron+ on there but it broke. poo. i'm looking into getting the maxon AF9 in its place. i'm thinking of the jacques Meistersinger for the chorus.
like i said, the search for cool effects will never end, but i think i've stumbled onto some good ones.

Hey abark000, I notice that you aren't using the Trigger input of your EP-1. You should really give it a try if you haven't already. It really helps the expressiveness of the EP-1 when using it with an overdrive. That BJFE Blue Berry is a bass overdrive correct? Anyway, I'm not entirely sure how the TU-2 works, but I'd bet you could take your trigger signal off of there somehow.
