Post your Studio! <Talkbass Edition! v.01>

I’ve been setting up this space the last few months… it is an open TV room full of book shelves, and it has proven functional. I’m enjoying having a dedicated space to try things.

I’ve been building this space out since last October. It’s about 800sqft. The interface, monitors, and general mixing/overdub area is behind the blue curtains for the time being.

I’m currently building a vocal booth and will be rearranging the entire space over the next month or so to improve the “flow” and feel of the studio.

The first picture is the most recent one of the three. It shows the addition of a drum shield, and the microphones on the kit. This has dramatically increased isolation and allowed us to start doing high quality live-off-the-floor recordings for bands, even though the space isn’t necessarily 100% treated for such things. We’re up to 16 simultaneous channels and hope to increase this to 24 by the end of the summer.

It’s located in a former medical centre, in the old rehab room, which lent us the name for our studio. Other spaces on the building are being converted for other types of art (video, painting, solo rehearsal rooms), and I have one other room for myself which is dedicated to building and repairing instruments, pedals, and amps.

Here’s my humble, yet pretty stocked space. I used to run a studio, but couldn’t stay afloat through Covid, so all of my gear is now stuck in my spare bedroom. Everything is all mobile, though - I’ll do the occasional session elsewhere and bring my rig. Really hoping to buy a home in the next year or so and build a garage studio, but until then, this will do!

My most used studio was the one in my office downstairs. But now my wife uses it as her office, and I'm finding I prefer to practice and record in my living room. So I took an antique magazine rack and made a few additions and mods to it to use this setup that easily hides away in my living room and can be used as an endtable next to my recliner...

Entire writing/recording/practice/gig all on one board...(either velcroed to the top of my combo amp, or sitting in my custom endtable "rack")...

I do everything in the box with Logic Pro.

I know it looks like a crazy cockpit, but all 6 sets of speakers are blown out to flat with Sonarworks. It's nice to be able to make sure your mixes travel well. I became infatuated with Tannoy's from being in the studio for two albums with producer Ken Scott. I also double check the mixes at my office up on the hill, where I have two pairs of vintage Advents, a pair of the new Adam desk speakers, some IK multimedia iMonitors and some Edifiers.

Also have a bass cabinet that holds 16 of my 24 medium scale basses. #25 is a short scale Mouse that Rob built for me in 2004 when his shop was in Santa Barbara.

I like your little vertical rig there! That’s a very clever solution. I’m gonna think about doing something similar for my desk… it’s too cluttered and I find clutter makes it harder for me to concentrate and get work done

Yeah, you have to plan a bit when you shoehorn an entire control room and 16 basses into a 10 X 12 room!

Jebus... My headphones feel beyond inadequate! Got my first 7.1.4 Logic mixing session in today (class) and oh my it rocks. I don't know if I'm delaying a scuba vacation or delaying buying monitors buy one of those is gonna happen.
