for some who dont cant spend lots of money on 20 or 30 pedals but want to experiment extensively with these tools there is also an alternative:
native instruments guitar rig. for those who dont heard of it. its and amp/effect simulation program with lots of options of guitar amps, phasers, reverb, delay, chorus, flanger, loop station, wahs, synths etc etc..
Here's one even less expensive: you can get a USB A/D/A converter and use it to access a slew of different VST plugins through your computer. For a free VST host, you can use the Cantabile Lite program: http://www.cantabilesoftware.com/lite/
From there you can download many different VST effects, from the familiar to the exotic. Fretted Synth had released several audio-triggered synthesizers, but when they closed down, the software was archived at Invalid Link Removed
I just found this complete library of Fretted Synth effects; these are pretty nice quality effects, and most of them track bass tones very well. And the latency on even an avergae machine like my dedicated laptop is just a few milliseconds. I've been experimenting with several of them for a few days now, and starting to get some really interesting sounds. All I have to do is decide what I really like!
